Kiss My Ass - Classic Kiss Regrooved is the title of a tribute album that was created in 1994 in honor of the Kiss group . In addition to many, mostly US-American artists, the German band Die Ärzte also recorded a song for the album.

background

The songs were recorded in the course of 1992 and 1993 under the responsibility of the artists in different studios and with different producers. The musicians of the group Shandi's Addiction, consisting of singer Maynard James Keenan ( Tool ), guitarist Tom Morello ( Rage Against the Machine , Audioslave ), bassist Billy Gould ( Faith No More ) and drummer Brad Wilk (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave), had only chosen to include the title Calling Dr. Love teamed up.

Strutter , recorded by Extreme, is an unusual rendition because it also contains the main riff of God of Thunder before and during Nuno Bettencourt 's guitar solo, the vocal opening of the song Heaven's on Fire in the repetition of the Strutter text line "But when she wants / She'll pass you by "while the chorus of Shout It Out Loud is performed by the backing vocals singer . After the song ends, a band member sings the introductory guitar lick from Love Gun .

The situation is similar with the version of Unholy recorded by the German band Die Ärzte : The text was translated into German and elements of the Kiss hit I Was Made for Lovin 'You were woven into the bridge .

The cover of the album showed a family of four (father, mother, daughter, son) seated at a dining table in front of the American flag , apparently praying , whose faces were made up with the masks of the members of the Kiss group. The only exception is the boy: Since the rights to the make-up design of Ace Frehley were not with Kiss, but with Frehley when the album was released, the "Spaceman" mask on the cover was given a freely designed make-up replaced.

Kiss My Ass was released as a record on color vinyl and on CD; the Canadian , Japanese and Australian variants show the respective national flags instead of the American flag in the background. The original plan to release a double album, which contained the respective original versions of Kiss on the second record, was abandoned shortly before publication, but the first edition of this limited edition in the USA appeared in a gatefold cover.

Two versions of the CD were released in the USA: One with the full title, the second with the label Kiss My A **, this version was sold in family-oriented companies such as K-Mart . As single was Detroit Rock City, recorded by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones , published. It was released on green vinyl with the original version of the song by Kiss on the back.

"Missing in Action"

On a thank you list in the booklet of the CD and on the inner sleeve of the record, the band thanked all artists under the heading "Missing in Action" who had agreed to participate in the project, but had not put it into practice for various reasons. These included u. a. Die Toten Hosen , Nikki Sixx , Ozzy Osbourne , Skid Row , Alice in Chains , Ugly Kid Joe , Soundgarden , Stone Temple Pilots , Tears for Fears , Run DMC , and Public Enemy . The reasons for not taking part varied: in some cases the record companies had forbidden the artists to take part, in some cases the timely recording and delivery of the songs was prevented by overlapping dates. Die Toten Hosen released their version of the song Do You Love Me in 1996 as part of the single of their song Bonnie & Clyde.

reception

Jörg Staude wrote for Metal Hammer that, with the exception of the country superpower Garth Brooks , “all other combos had adhered to the given motto of giving the songs their own (band) identity.” And that is precisely what makes “this album a great one unusual: “Lenny Kravitz / Stevie Wonder, the Lemonheads, Extreme, Gin Blossoms, Dinosaur Jr., Anthrax, Toad the Wet Sprocket, the project from parts of Tool / Rage Against The Machine / Faith No More, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Yoshiki and the aforementioned Garth Brooks - the mixture is “more of a crossover than anything else.” As a critic of the album, one could “have forgotten / suppressed / not noticed why, for example, Diamonds And Rust by Judas Priest or Van Halens You Really Got Me so successful were and still are. "This is what is called further development, and that has" nothing to do with the fact that "the good old songs are screwed up here". Good songs, that is exactly “is the point.

Musikexpress said that Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley had "lend a hand" when recording this Kiss tribute. In “loose consultation with the two heads of the shock rock institution”, the bands involved would have found it relatively easy to “freely inferpreiteren the originals without too much respect.” “Only the contributions of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones ( Detroit Rock City ), the Gin Blossoms ( Christine Sixteen ) and Extreme ( Strutter ) "were" true to the factory. "The remaining covers would have" at best the title in common with the respective originals; "Dinosaurjr. and the Lemonheads plowed "snotty" through Goin 'Blind or Plaster Caster , Shandi's Addiction, an "all-star troop made up of members of Faith No More, Rage Against The Machine and Tool," dismantled "brutally" Calling Dr. Love , and Toad the Wet Sprocket turned the rock & roll All Nite into a cozy campfire ballad. Hard Luck Woman in a country version by Garth Brooks, Black Diamond as a seven-minute orchestral version and the German sung Unholy by the doctors should finally make Kiss purists water in the eyes. "" Whoever likes the music of Kiss in its original state not considered a holy cow, this plate should be a real delight. "
