Tom Morello (born May 30, 1964 in Harlem , New York ) is an American guitarist . He became known as the guitarist of the crossover band Rage Against the Machine and played in the alternative rock band Audioslave .

Morello is very politically active, co-founder of the Axis of Justice and a member of the Industrial Workers of the World .

He was listed in Rolling Stone magazine as one of "The Top 20 New Guitarists" and is number 40 on Rolling Stone's list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" .

Life

The son of Mary Morello, founder of Parents For Rock and Rap , and the Kenyan guerrilla fighter and revolutionary Ngethe Njoroge grew up in the US state of Illinois . Tom Morello is the great-nephew of Jomo Kenyatta , Kenya's first elected President .

After attending high school , Morello graduated from Harvard University with a degree in political science , which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986 . He then moved to Los Angeles , where he joined a band called Electric Sheep , which also included Tool guitarist Adam Jones .

In 1988 he played with Lock Up, with whom he released his first album Something Bitchin 'This Way Comes in July 1989. During this time he met Brad Wilk . He later met Zack de la Rocha , who introduced Morello to Tim Commerford . The four musicians formed Rage Against the Machine in 1991 and soon got a record deal. Four albums followed, all of which celebrated great international success.

After Zack De La Rocha left Rage Against The Machine in 2000, the decision was made after a few sessions with former Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell to record an album. After the recordings, it was decided to continue this project permanently under the name Audioslave . By 2006 three studio albums were released, all of which hit the charts.

At the beginning of 2007 Chris Cornell left Audioslave and Morello, Commerford and Wilk went on a reunion tour with Zack de la Rocha as Rage Against The Machine . In the same year the first album of Morello's folk solo project The Nightwatchman, which has been followed since 2003, was released . Two more followed in 2008 and 2011.

In 2006 the Street Sweeper Social Club was founded, a project by Morello with rapper Boots Riley from The Coup . Similar to Rage Against The Machine, rock and rap elements are also combined here. An EP called NINJA 2009 Tour Sampler was released in the USA in 2009, and in the same year the band's debut album called Street Sweeper Social Club was released in early August 2009 for Germany. In August 2010, SSSC released the EP The Ghetto Blaster EP . Morello was a special guest with Claudio Sanchez at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) on April 13, 2012.

In 2015 he founded the record label Firebrand Records with Ryan Harvey . He also announced in an interview that he was working on a new The Nightwatchman album.

Political activities

Morello is known for his political commitment. For example, he founded the Axis of Justice with Serj Tankian from System of a Down , where young activists can meet. He also appeared at the G8 protests on June 2, 2007 in Heiligendamm at the political and cultural event Move against G8 .

In August 2012, Morello spoke out in Rolling Stone magazine clearly against the US Republican Paul Ryan . He had counted Rage Against the Machine among his favorite bands in interviews . Morello said to Rolling Stone: "... Paul Ryan's love of Rage Against the Machine is amusing, because he is the embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades ... Don't mistake me, I clearly see that Ryan has a whole lotta 'rage' in him: A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment. Basically the only thing he's not raging against is the privileged elite he's groveling in front of for campaign contributions ... "

Morello can be heard on the Primus album Antipop (1999) as lead guitarist. With the Class of '99 he re-recorded the title track to Another Brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd for the Faculty soundtrack. Morello has also worked with various artists such as The Prodigy , Wu-Tang Clan , Macy Gray , Atari Teenage Riot , Bruce Springsteen , Jimmy Page , Linkin Park , Dave Matthews Band , Run-DMC , Cypress Hill and Raury .

He also appeared with Billy Gould from Faith No More and Maynard James Keenan from Tool under the name Shandi's Addiction with a Kiss cover song. On May 19 and June 4, 2006 Tom Morello gave concerts for the farmers of the South Central Farmers , who feel oppressed by the US state. Zack de la Rocha also supports this organization.

In the computer game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock , Tom Morello has a guest appearance as one of three final bosses. For this, a “Battle” was composed and recorded by Tom Morello. If the final boss is defeated, the player can use Tom Morello as an avatar and continue playing as Tom Morello.

He made a cameo in the movie Iron Man . He also played a crewman in the series Star Trek: Spaceship Voyager (episode The Good Shepherd , Season 6, Episode 20), as well as an unnamed character in the movie Star Trek: The Uprising . In the documentary Metal Evolution , he and other well-known colleagues discuss the genre of the metal genre.

On April 16, 2010 the new album Rise Up by Cypress Hill was released , in which Tom Morello contributed to the track of the same name and the song Shut 'em down . In 1998 he worked with Cypress Hill. Morello made a remix for their song Checkmate .

In September 2011, Morello announced that it would be co- developing Hepburn comics with Scott . The series will be called Orchid , Morello also wants to offer a song for download with each issue.

In the spring of 2013 Tom Morello temporarily replaced the long-time guitarist Steven Van Zandt as part of Bruce Springsteen's Wrecking Ball Tour , as he was prevented from shooting the Norwegian series Lilyhammer . At the beginning of January 2014 after the tour, Bruce Springsteen's new album entitled High Hopes was released . Morello appeared in the songs High Hopes , Harry's Place , American Skin (41 Shots) , Just Like Fire Would , Heaven's Wall , Hunter of Invisible Game and The Ghost of Tom Joad, among others .

From 2016 to 2019 he played with Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk in the band Prophets of Rage , which was to be a sequel to Rage Against the Machine. The American rappers Chuck D and B-Real acted as front singers .

In 2016, together with Ryan Harvey and Ani DiFranco, he set the rediscovered Woody Guthrie text Old Man Trump to music , which was reported in the media as part of Donald Trump's presidential candidacy .

Morello is known for his unusual and innovative way of playing and is one of the "100 best guitarists in the world" according to Rolling Stone .

A characteristic effect is its toggle kill switch , which switches the guitar signal on and off on guitars with a Les Paul circuit. Morello integrated this circuit into many of his guitars to achieve “stuttering effects”. It also generates feedback with one of the stage speakers .
