Kill-Switch (sound engineering)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A kill switch is a technical device for electric guitars , which a staccato - sound effect , then, allows a "stuttering" of the sound. The name comes from the English word for emergency switch , also dead man's switch , the principle of which is used for purposes other than intended .

Originally, this effect was realized on guitars with two pickups with independent volume control by switching one of the pickups to mute. The attack hand can now generate the rhythm by pressing the pickup selector while the grasping hand is playing hammerings .

Other implementation options are, for example, the use of a push button , which, when pressed, switches the signal line to ground, causing the sound to drop out.

Guitarists like Tom Morello ( Rage Against the Machine , Audioslave ) or Brian “Buckethead” Caroll often play in this way, and this technique can also be observed with Jimi Hendrix and David Gilmour .

In DJ mixing consoles, the kill switch is the function of switching off a frequency band of the equalizer using a toggle switch.
