Buckethead

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Buckethead is the stage name of the American guitarist Brian Patrick Carroll (born May 13, 1969 in Huntington Beach ). Buckethead works mostly as a soloist, but has also worked with a number of well-known musicians, including Guns N 'Roses (from 2000 to 2004) as well as Bill Laswell , Bootsy Collins , Les Claypool and Serj Tankian . According to Wolf Kampmann , he is “one of the fastest guitarists in the world, who creates the most daring fusions of speed metal , techno and jazz while running endlessly .” Hannes Fricke describes him as a “specialist in thrash metal , funk and excursions into jazz ".

Career

Early years

In 1988, the young Brian Carroll submitted a demo song called Brazos to the American Guitar Player Magazine . The journalist Jas Obrecht became aware of the talent and the two became friends. The recordings for Young Buckethead and Acoustic Shards were soon made in the von Obrecht house , but they were only to be released 15 years later. After some self-published demos, appearances with his band Deli Creeps and participation in publications by z. B. Henry Kaiser , Will Ackerman and the improvisation project Company 91 by Derek Bailey , the debut album Bucketheadland was released on the Avant label by John Zorn in 1992 .

Bill Laswell and Bryan Mantia

This brought him into the orbit of Bill Laswell , who started the speed dub project Praxis with him and drummer Bryan Mantia ( Limbomaniacs , later with Primus and Guns N 'Roses) . Up to the year 2000 Buckethead worked, partly with Laswell, partly with Mantia or others, on various solo projects and the side project Death Cube K (anagram for Buckethead) and took part in a variety of publications from the Laswell area, including albums by Bernie Worrell , Tony Williams , Julian Schnabel , Anton Fier , Jonas Hellborg and Jon Hassell . In addition to the performances and studio recordings by Praxis, the highlights were the collaboration with Bootsy Collins on the Zillatron project in 1993 and his best-selling album Monsters & Robots in 1999, which was published with a comparatively extensive promotion. Towards the end of the decade, a very fruitful friendship began with the actor and musician Viggo Mortensen . Noteworthy publications of the two are Pandemoniumfromamerica and Intelligence Failure , which u. a. deal with the Iraq war and the American administration under George W. Bush .

Guns N 'Roses, Les Claypool and Serj Tankian

After Buckethead was already under discussion in 1992/93 as the successor to John Frusciante at the Red Hot Chili Peppers , he suddenly achieved greater fame when Axl Rose called him in 2000 to replace Slash in Guns N 'Roses . The delay of the album Chinese Democracy as well as the lack of appearances caused the guitarist to quit in 2004. A little later Ozzy Osbourne considered a collaboration, but could not get used to the masking of Buckethead. Instead, Buckethead and Les Claypool intensified the group Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains , which had already played some concerts in 2002 as a replacement for Praxis with Claypool instead of Laswell on bass. After the album The Big Eyeball in the Sky and the subsequent tour, Buckethead signed a contract with Serjical Strike from Serj Tankian , the singer of System of a Down , where the album Enter The Chicken was released in 2005 . Musicians as diverse as Serj Tankian himself, Laswell's wife Gigi , Saul Williams , Efrem Schulz , Azam Ali and Maximum Bob, the singer of Buckethead's old group Deli Creeps, were represented. A first regular CD called Dawn Of The Deli Creeps was also released in 2005.

Travis Dickerson

The majority of Buckethead's releases in the new millennium, however, will be taken over by keyboardist Travis Dickerson , with whom the guitarist has collaborated on projects such as the jazz-rock formation Thanatopsis , the short-lived Gorgone and Cobra Strike, and the band Cornbugs led by Bill Moseley . In addition to new albums, out-of-print publications are also available for download via the TDRS ( Travis Dickerson Recording Studios ) webshop . In addition, some older CDs from Death Cube K or works with Shin Terai are available for sale.

In 2006 Buckethead revised his song "Jordan" for the computer game Guitar Hero 2 , the original version with voice samples by Michael Jordan called "Jump Man" was released in 1999 on "Monsters & Robots".

Publication campaign 2007

There were a large number of releases in 2007: In addition to the regular albums such as Pepper's Ghost and Decoding The Tomb Of Bansheebot , Buckethead released a strictly limited edition called In Search of The in February , which consisted of 13 CDs with sleeves painted by the artist himself. DCK (from Death Cube K), the re-release of the 1991 demo Bucketheadland Blueprints and Cyborg Slunks , which stylistically is a continuation of In Search of The , also appeared in a similar form . Kevin's Noodle House , a collaboration with Bryan Mantia and the 5-CD set Monolith (by Death Cube K) rounded off the year before Profanation (Preparation For A Coming Darkness) , the new album by Praxis, in Japan on January 1st , appeared. Not dissimilar to Enter The Chicken , it features various guest singers such as Iggy Pop , Mike Patton , Serj Tankian and Maximum Bob.

Since 2008

In February 2008, Buckethead gave the first regular concerts since 2006 and toured the United States for much of the year. On February 16th, Jas Obrecht announced the release of the CD "From The Coop", a collection of demos from 1988, in the officially recognized forum of Buckethead.tk , which was released on March 9th.

Running after Deer by Alix Lambert and Travis Dickerson, which also features Buckethead, was released on August 15th.

In September three more CDs were released, including an album with Mantia and Dickerson ( The Dragons of Eden ) reminiscent of the band project Thanatopsis , an experimental collaboration with tour partner That 1 Guy as Frankenstein Brothers ( Bolt On Neck ) and a solo CD ( Albino Slug ) in the style of the predecessors Pepper's Ghost and Decoding the Tomb of Bansheebot . Bolt On Neck and Albino Slug were only available at concerts until December.

Junkyard Waltz from Freekbass followed at the end of October with the participation of the guitarist as well as the debut album by Science Faxtion (with Brain and Bootsy Collins, among others), initially as a download. On November 23, the release of Chinese Democracy , Guns N 'Roses' long-delayed sixth studio album , followed . Buckethead can be heard on twelve of the tracks, although at the time of publication he had not been a member of the band for more than four years.

The guitarist also worked on the sampler Fallen Soldiers Memorial , initiated by Bootsy Collins, for the benefit of the Fallen Heroes Foundation.

On January 30th, 2009 the 25th solo album Slaughterhouse on the Prairie , produced by Dan Monti, was released. In March 2009 the album A Pleasant Fiction recorded in 2001 by Meridiem, a project by the singer Percy Howard , was re-released on the English label Voiceprint. At the end of April 2009, the 26th solo album A Real Diamond in the Rough was announced on the TDRS website for May. Delivery began a little later. Drummer Bryan Mantia can be heard on three tracks.

On July 5th, 10 days after Michael Jackson's death, a tribute song called "The Homing Beacon" was published on Buckethead's homepage.

2010–2013: Illness, Return, and Pikes Publications

The year 2010 began Buckethead with the release of the album Shadows Between the Sky . In the same month the renowned guitar manufacturer Gibson released the "Buckethead Signature Les Paul".

In the following months it became quieter around Buckethead due to illness. On his website he announced that it was a herniated disc. Nevertheless, he released the 5-part, limited CD set Best Regards in July , on which he can be heard together with Brain and Melissa Reese.

In October 2010 his 29th solo album, Captain EO's Voyage , was released, which is musically linked to A Real Diamond in the Rough . With the title and the cover of the album he refers to his idol Michael Jackson and his film Captain EO .

In March 2011, Buckethead released the single The Rising Sun , which can only be purchased as a download and the entire proceeds of which will be donated to the victims of the earthquake disaster in Japan .

From May 2011, several solo albums were released as part of the new Buckethead Pikes series, which can only be obtained (as a CD version) via the associated website. Buckethead Pikes is a fictional kiosk in Bucketheadland. So far (as of December 2017) the Buckethead Pikes series comprises 273 studio albums, the first five of which were released in 2011: It's Alive , Empty Space , 3 Foot Clearence (previously available in a limited edition as Happy Holidays From Buckethead ), Underground Chamber and Look Up There . Buckethead also worked with Lawson Rollins on his album Elevation in 2011 .

In December 2011, the album Electric Sea was announced as a direct sequel to the Electric Tears album from 2002. The album was released on February 21, 2012 and contains not only original compositions but also cover versions by Johann Sebastian Bach ( La Gavotte ) and Alfredo Catalani ( La Wally ) as well as the previously published piece The Homing Beacon . Furthermore, five more Buckethead Pikes albums followed in 2012 with Balloon Cement , The Shores of Molokai , Racks , March of the Slunks and The Silent Picture Book .

The 11th, 12th and 14th albums of the Pikes series were released on March 26th and April 13th and 30th 2013 in limited editions as hand-signed CD-Rs . A regular release of the three albums has been announced. On May 13th, the 13th and 15th Pikes albums were released together, the latter again initially being a limited edition (autographed CD-R). A special feature of the initially omitted Pikes issue no. 13 is the cover motif , which Buckethead and Brian Carroll officially unmasked for the first time. It is a photo of the young Brian Carroll with his father.

The regular version of the 11th Pike album was released on June 4, 2013 under the title Forgotten Library . In addition, the 15th, 16th and 17th albums of the Pikes series were again initially released as a limited edition (hand-signed CD-R). From then on, Buckethead released one Pike album after the other - in quick succession. Nos. 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26 came onto the market within half a year. So far it is unclear why of the new Pikes albums only the albums Pike 23, 24, 25 and 26 initially received a title and a cover. The albums Pike 12-22 were only brought to the people with limited covers that were drawn by Buckethead himself. The 13th Pike album is an exception, because the cover shows an old photo of Buckethead at a young age - without a mask - together with his father.

Influences and inspiration

  • Buckethead counts Michael Jackson , Shawn Lane , Louis Johnson , Jennifer Batten , Joe Satriani and his teacher Paul Gilbert among his early musical influences.
  • Thematically, the Japanese series Giant Robo by Mitsuteru Yokoyama had a massive impact on him, which resulted in albums such as Giant Robot (1994) or Day Of The Robot (1996).
  • He frequently visits the Disneyland Resort and created his own Abusement Park "Bucketheadland" on records and his homepage . An album with well-known songs from various Disney productions has been planned for years.
  • A love for the genre of horror and splatter films is also unmistakable. The butcher image of his youth band Deli Creeps was consistently continued with the Cornbugs (with Bill Moseley , one of the leading actors from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series).

Life

Almost nothing is known about Brian Carroll's personal life. There is no official biography; his total work of art includes the claim that he was born in a chicken coop and raised by chickens. In public he appears almost exclusively with a white mask . He also wears an upside-down cardboard bucket on his head. Mostly this is from the fast food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken , sometimes with a sticker that says Funeral . Alternatively, he wears other masks from time to time, e.g. B. when it is filmed during rehearsals or recordings. The only known photo of him without a mask for a long time comes from Guitar Player Magazine , which heralded the beginning of his career in 1988. The Young Buckethead (Volume 1) DVD contains a clip that shows the young Brian Carroll dressed in a transparent mask and thus reveals his face almost unveiled.

He rarely gives interviews and usually speaks of himself in a third person through a hand puppet named Herbie (rarely Albert ). This caused confusion among some journalists, especially during his time with Guns N 'Roses.

His father Tom Carroll worked as an athletic director at Damien High School in La Verne . He died in September 2014, at the age of 84, after a long illness. Brian has three sisters (Lynn, Lisa and Laurie) and one brother (John).
