Mike Silverman , better known as That 1 Guy , is an American musician and street performer from Berkeley , California . One of his trademarks is the Magic Pipe , an instrument developed and built by him that is over two meters tall and made of galvanized metal pipes, adhesive tape, various small parts from the hardware store and two individual strings . Another distinguishing feature are Silverman's sometimes bizarre lyrics.

Career

Silverman received a classical training as a double bassist at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music , later he studied jazz bass at Los Medanos College and played in numerous jazz bands on the US West Coast and as a session musician for Dewey Redman , Buddy Collette , Tom Waits and Karry Walker.

Dissatisfied with the possibilities of the double bass, partly out of frustration at the bad salaries of his band The Fabulous Hedgehogs, he developed the Magic Pipe and has never played bass in public since then.

In 2000 the concept for That 1 Guy was born and in the same year Silverman worked on his debut album Songs in the Key of Beotch , which was released in 2004 by Righteous Babe Records . In 2007 the live DVD Live in the Land of Oz and the studio CD The Moon Is Disgusting followed .

In 2008 he toured again with the experimental guitarist Buckethead and released the album Bolt on Neck with him as Frankenstein Brothers (note: bolt-on neck is the connection between guitar neck and body made popular by the Fender company by means of bolts or screws designated).

Silverman's instrument consists largely of commercially available metal pipes and matching fittings that are connected to one another in a harp-like shape. Two individual strings are stretched over this construct , which can be plucked or played with a bow. The instrument is also equipped with numerous sensors that are used to call up various drum samples. Pedals and a snare drum complete the instrument.
