Dewey Redman
Dewey Redman (born May 17, 1931 in Fort Worth , Texas , † September 2, 2006 in Brooklyn / New York City , New York) was an American free jazz and bebop saxophonist. He mainly played tenor saxophone , but occasionally also alto saxophone , suona and rarely also clarinet .
Live and act
Redman, who comes from a musical family (saxophonist and arranger Don Redman is his uncle), began playing the saxophone when he was thirteen. He first played in marching bands and studied industrial design . In 1959 he moved to Los Angeles , where he formed a big band with Pharoah Sanders , Donald Garrett and Monty Waters . In 1966 he recorded his debut album Look for the Black Star for Fontana , on which the pianist Jym Young, the bassist Raphael Donald Garrett and the drummer Eddie Moore participated.
Redman was best known for his collaboration with Ornette Coleman from 1968 to 1972. Between 1971 and 1976 he was part of Keith Jarrett's "American Quartet" , as heard on the album The Survivors' Suite . At times he also played in Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra and took part in Carla Bly's Escalator over the Hill ("Little Pony Soldier"). He also played with Don Cherry ( Old and New Dreams ) and Pat Metheny . In 1996 he worked on an album by pianist Peter Delano , which was only released after Redman's death ( For Dewey ). In the 2000s he still worked with Jon Ballantyne , Steve Turre ( TNT , 2000), Jane Bunnett / Stanley Cowell ( Spirituals & Dedications , 2001), John Menegon and his son Joshua Redman ( Back East , 2006).
With a dozen recordings under his own name, Redman established himself as one of the most distinguished tenor saxophonists of his time. In the field of jazz he was involved in 121 recording sessions between 1966 and 2007, according to Tom Lord .
Director Daniel Berman directed the award-winning documentary Dewey Time about Redman in 2001 .
Redman died of complications from a stroke in Brooklyn, New York.
