Monty Waters (* 14. April 1938 in Modesto , California ; † 23. December 2008 in Munich ) was an American saxophonist of modern jazz .

Live and act

Waters received his first musical training from his aunt and initially played in church. After graduating from college, he was a member of rhythm and blues bands. In the late 1950s he toured with musicians such as BB King , Lightnin 'Hopkins , Little Richard and James Brown . He played with King Pleasure in San Francisco and ran a late night session at Club Bop City in the early 1960s . There he came into contact with musicians such as Miles Davis , John Coltrane , Art Blakey , Red Garland and Dexter Gordon , who visited this club after their concerts. He also formed a big band with Pharoah Sanders , Dewey Redman and Donald Garrett . In 1969 he moved to New York and went on a concert tour with Jon Hendricks . During the 1970s he was a co-founder of “Loft Jazz” and played with musicians such as Sam Rivers , Joe Lee Wilson and Rashied Ali , but also with Charli Persip , Billy Higgins , Woody Shaw and Cedar Walton . Like numerous other jazz musicians, he migrated to Paris in the 1980s , where he worked with Chet Baker , Pharoah Sanders and Johnny Griffin . Through Mal Waldron and Marty Cook he then came to Munich, where he lived for many years in Embryo's shared apartment and from where he also went to Spain , Italy , Austria , France , Hungary , Poland , the Czech Republic , Slovakia , Israel and Russia (including Siberia) traveled for concerts. Waters continued to work with musicians such as Paulo Cardoso , Tom Nicholas , Götz Tangerding , Hannes Beckmann , Suchredin Chronov or Joe Malinga and led his own bands.

Waters, who also worked as a composer and singer in his last years, performed both with Embryo and in a duet with the guitarist and violinist Titus Waldenfels from Munich.
