Paulo Cardoso (born July 25, 1953 in São Paulo ; † July 21, 2018 in Munich ) was a Brazilian modern jazz bassist who lived in Germany.

Live and act

Cardoso began making music in the trombone choir of his parish at the age of six . He played the cello at the age of nine before switching to the double bass at the age of fourteen and undergoing classical music training to become an orchestral musician. In addition, he often stayed with percussionist Nenê at Hermeto Pascoal . In 1973 he came to Germany to study at the Trossingen University of Music . In 1976 he moved to Munich and in 1978 decided to work in the jazz field .

His musical versatility was valued by such diverse band leaders as Klaus Ignatzek (until 1989), Art Farmer (from 1985), Mal Waldron (from 1989) or Archie Shepp (early 1990s), who hired him for tours. He was also a member of Allan Praskin and Larry Porter's quartet , where he played postbop . He also worked with Benny Bailey , Leon Thomas , Etta Cameron , Kitty Margolis , Airto Moreira , Monty Waters and Leszek Zadlo . At the end of the 1990s he was part of Claus Reichstaller's quartet ; most recently he also accompanied Zipflo Weinrich and Fjoralba Turku . With his own band Acervo he interpreted the Música Popular Brasileira .

Cardoso was a full-time lecturer at the University of Music and Theater in Munich , having taught double bass and ensemble playing at the jazz department of the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich since 1992.

He died a few days before his 65th birthday in Munich after a brief, serious illness.
