Karl Ratzer

Karl Ratzer (born July 4, 1950 in Vienna ) is an Austrian jazz guitarist, singer and composer. His father is the well-known artist and Porajmos survivor from the Roma ethnic group Karl Stojka . The Viennese jazz musician Harri Stojka is his cousin.

Live and act

Ratzer played 1962-63 with Rudi Biber in the formation The Teenbeats . This was followed by appearances in the HVZ ( Hernalser entertainment center ) and other localities such as the Chattanooga am Graben . His career began in 1964, the first time as an autodidact, later supported by friends like Richard Schönherz or Hans Salomon , he taught himself harmony and music theory . At the beginning of his career, Ratzer played with Hannes Pater and Lippy Behrends in the Vienna Beatles , a rock and roll band (1964–1965). Then he was a member of an R&B band, Slaves , with Lippy Behrends, Ernst Lauscher, Padhi Frieberger , Herbert Radakovics. It continued with Charles Ryders Corporation , a beat band from 1967–1968, with Georg Hieblinger, Steve Embrow, Wolfgang Meinhardt, Ernst Brüll. The next band (1969 to June 1971) was C - Department , a rock band, with Richard Schönherz , George Dogette, Manuel Rigoni. This was followed by the band Gipsy Love , to which he belonged from June 1971 to 1972 ( Kurt Hauenstein , Peter Wolf , Jano Stojka). In 1971 he also wrote the musical Gorilla Gorilla with Peter Wolf . After Gipsy Love followed Schönherz, Ratzer, Dogette, Rigoni with Richard Schönherz, Karl Ratzer, George Dogette, Manuel Rigoni.

In 1972 he went to the USA , where he gained a foothold in the American music scene. He was immediately involved in a project called "High Voltage" (later known as " Rufus & Chaka Khan "). For some time he lived in Atlanta . In 1977 he formed a band in New York with Jeremy Steig , Dan Wall , Eddie Gomez , Joe Chambers and Ray Mantilla . He made recordings with musicians such as Chet Baker , Bob Mintzer , Tom Harrell , Bob Berg , Joe Farrell and Steve Grossman .

In 1980 he returned to Vienna, but continued to work with international jazz musicians such as Art Farmer , Clark Terry , Lee Konitz , Chaka Khan and Eddie Lockjaw Davis . From 1999 to 2003 he was a visiting professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. In 2004 he moved to the Vienna Music Institute (VMI), where he works as a lecturer. He also appears with his own formations.

Awards

On January 23, 2002, he was awarded the Medal of Honor by the Federal Capital of Vienna for his services to music .
