Padhi Frieberger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Padhi Frieberger (born September 28, 1931 in Meidling im Tale / Krems-Land district / Lower Austria; † January 9, 2016 in Vienna) was an Austrian painter , object artist , photo artist and jazz musician who was often understood as a nonconformist who generally refused to enter the art market.

life and work

Frieberger lived for a time at Hagenberg Castle (Mistelbach district) in contrast to the “narrow-minded Viennese philistine and artsy society”, the so-called “warm showerers” without electricity and heating. At times he was a jazz musician with Fatty George in the Art Center in Vienna. Without ever having owned a camera himself, he developed a photographic work. He is considered one of the most radical pioneers of the Austrian art scene after the Second World War and was initially active in the Vienna group .

From the 1950s onwards he sent mail-art all over the world. For years he was a regular visitor to Erich Johams salon. Frieberger's art work cannot be consistently assigned because his works are too diverse and thus defy categorization. His lifestyle was precarious. His art was only marketed late.

For an overall understanding, the films (directors: Frerry Radax 1959–1961, Ferry Radax 1968/69, Ernst Lauscher 1970, ORF 1971, Gerlinde Semper 1982, Peter Noever & Achille Castiglioni 1984, Karo Wolm & Peter Resetarits 1986, Fritz Kleibel 1994) significant. The films were shown at the Viennale Film Festival as well as in ORF art / culture programs. Frieberger died on January 9, 2016 in Vienna. He was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
