Peter Noever (2005)

Peter Noever (born May 1, 1941 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian designer and curator for art, architecture and media. From 1986 he was artistic director and managing director of the MAK, the Austrian Museum for Applied Art / Contemporary Art , in Vienna ; in 2011 he resigned after an affair.

Life

Noever initiated one of the most important design objects in Austria at the time , the futuristic aluminum chair "Galaxy" designed by Walter Pichler in 1966 . Also in 1966, Noever commissioned and curated Hans Hollein with the first environment show “Selection '66” at the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts.

In 1968 Noever met Arthur C. Clarke , futurologist, science fiction writer and co-author of Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time on the occasion of the “UNISPACE I” space conference in Vienna .

In 1969 Peter Noever founded the "ifabo", the international trade exhibition for office organization , together with Manfred Bene, Helmut R. Scholz and H. Laszlo , which took place for the first time in February 1970 in the Vienna Exhibition Center , today's Museum Quarter . It should present the latest achievements in modern workplace design every year.

During this time, Noever became a board member of the office organization working group, which played a pioneering role in the direction of a structurally organized humanization of everyday work. As part of these activities, Noever succeeded in bringing Ernest Dichter , the "father of motivational research", born in Vienna and living in the USA, back to Vienna for the first time.

Noever's annual posters (including: We must finally begin to take our fate into our own hands!, 1976) first appeared in 1970.

Austria's first concept store , called "Section N", was initiated by Noever in 1971 and commissioned Hans Hollein with the design of the business premises on Schulerstrasse in Vienna's first district. The company founded by Peter Noever and run by his first wife, Katharina Noever, was the point of contact and platform for contemporary design until it closed in 1987.

In 1974 Noever visited Marshall McLuhan at the Center for Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto . In 1979 Noever founded the Center for Understanding Media in Vienna at the suggestion of and with Marshall McLuhan and with ORF avant-garde program designers Hans Preiner and Barrington Nevitt , of which Marshall McLuhan became president.

Noever was a lecturer in design analysis at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1975 to 1993 and visiting professor for museology at the University of Applied Arts Vienna from 1988 to 1989 . In 1982 he founded the architecture magazine “Umriss”, which he headed until 1994 as publisher and editor-in-chief and subsequently in close collaboration with Elisabeth Schweeger . He saw the magazine as an important forum for debates on architecture and art theory.

In his function as a member of the management of R. Svoboda & Co. Büroeinrichtungen, he presented a design program of classic modernism from Marcel Breuer and Bauhaus to Achille Castiglioni for the first time in Austria . The exhibition “Achille Castiglioni. Room installation, objects and industrial design ”curated Peter Noever in 1984, two years before his appointment as MAK director.

As director of the MAK, he managed the general renovation of the museum in collaboration with architect Sepp Müller from 1988 to 1993 and founded the MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles , California in 1994 . The redefinition of the museum led by Noever and the renovation of the building received international attention, particularly because of the repositioning of the collection. On behalf of Peter Noever, some of the most important artists, through their intervention in the MAK, created unique site-specific works of art that are still used today, twenty years later, as an orientation and challenge for art institutions and museums that are emerging. For these artistic interventions Noever was able to work with Donald Judd , Jenny Holzer , Günther Förg , Franz Graf , Barbara Bloom , Eichinger or Knechtl , Manfred Wakolbinger and Heimo Zobernig , but also Walter Pichler , James Wines / SITE , Gregor Eichinger for artistic interventions in the outdoor space , Franz West , Michael Kienzer and James Turrell win.

The redesign of the MAK in terms of content and structure (which still operates worldwide under the protected trademark developed by Noever together with the graphics team Catherine Rollier / Walter Bohatsch and reopened on May 1, 1993) resulted in the 1996 "Museum of the Year" award from Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

In 2006, Noever founded the Josef Hoffmann Museum in Brtnice (Pirnitz), his birthplace in the Czech Republic, which has since been run as a joint branch of the Moravian Gallery in Brno and the MAK. In 2008, Russ Leland donated his own house to Peter Noever for the MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles (Fitzpatrick-Leland House, designed in 1936 by Rudolph Michael Schindler, who was born in Vienna ). Peter Noever initiated the MAK Urban Future Initiative (UFI), Los Angeles.

Leave the MAK

On February 23, 2011, Noever resigned prematurely as MAK director because he had been made serious allegations. In the media he had been accused of misappropriating museum funds for private purposes. Events in the museum were far more expensive than estimated. The museum's board of trustees brought a criminal complaint against Noever. On November 14, 2011, the public prosecutor closed the proceedings for breach of trust, as Noever had deposited 220,000 euros as active remorse . In Noever's view, the reason for his immediate dismissal as MAK director no longer existed; he therefore appealed this to the labor court and demanded the claims he was entitled to in the event of regular termination of the employment relationship in the amount of 482,700 euros.

A rough report of the Court of Auditors, made known by the Viennese daily newspaper Kurier , made new allegations public in 2012, which, among other things, concerned 6,600 museum objects allegedly missing. Noever's successor at the MAK, Christoph Thun-Hohenstein , contradicted the claims that thousands of objects had disappeared; the information is misleading, some shrinkage goes back over two world wars to the imperial era. Thun-Hohenstein also complained about the lack of a standardized database.

The collection managers stood behind their former boss; there have been no more losses to complain about since the 1960s. Only 65 objects from the Asian collection would be missing with the note without further information , said Johannes Wieninger and asked the Court of Auditors to check the alleged shortfalls again.

Peter Noever stated in a published statement on media coverage of the preliminary report by the Court of Auditors that he had neither seen the report nor had the opportunity to comment on it. He emphasized that, contrary to the opinion of the Court of Auditors, the events in question would have benefited the MAK and had also resulted in considerable sponsorship. He could at any time refute the allegations made against him in the reporting. That is why he also chose the route of referring to independent courts.

In March 2013, the Court of Auditors repeated its allegations. This included u. a. that Noever was traveling an average of 79 days out of 221 working days per year. The “other travel expenses” - those that were not directly related to the preparations for the exhibition - increased by 715% from 2001 to 2010; Noever charged an average of 81,000 euros per year in travel expenses. Expenses for birthday parties in the amount of 172,000 euros and 11,000 euros in expenses for Noever's book “ chronically obsessive. The present must first be fought for ”, of which only eleven copies were sold, was just as critical of the Court of Auditors' report as the differently distributed funds within the MAK for personnel and further training and other details. Noever explained that he could still not understand the allegations, that everything was always transparent and that he “followed the maxim of thrift”.

Claudia Schmied (Federal Minister for Education, Art and Culture, 2007-2013) stated that Noever “has achieved a lot for Austrian art, for artists at home and abroad” despite all the justified criticisms.

Private life

Peter Noever lives and works in Vienna. He is married to the lawyer and cultural manager Elisabeth Noever-Ginthör. The two have a daughter together, Louisa Vita Noever. Noever's daughter from his first marriage, Ixy Nova Noever, is an ethnologist, filmmaker and university lecturer at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
