Sir Arthur Charles Clarke , CBE , FRAS , Sri Lankabhimanya , (* 16th December 1917 in Minehead , Somerset , England; † 19th March 2008 in Colombo , Sri Lanka ) was a British science fiction - writer and physicist . The film 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick , which is based on a short story by Clarke and whose screenplay Clarke wrote together with Kubrick, made him known outside of the science fiction scene. Clarke is considered a visionary of new techniques, which he described in scientific articles as well as in science fiction novels and short stories. With Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein he is often counted among the "Big Three" of English-language science fiction.

Life

Since Clarke was initially unable to study for financial reasons, he initially worked as an auditor. As early as the late 1930s, he was writing stories inspired by the science fiction magazines of his youth. During the Second World War he worked as a radar specialist for the Ground Controlled Approach in the Royal Air Force . These experiences form the basis of the novel Glide Path . After the war he studied mathematics and physics at King's College London , where he graduated in 1948.

Clarke was a participant in the world's first science fiction convention in 1937. Interested in the possibilities that space could offer mankind from an early age, he became a member of the British Interplanetary Society .

Since 1951 he has been a freelance writer. He married Marilyn Mayfield in June 1953. The marriage only lasted until December of the same year, and Clarke moved to Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1956.

In 1988 he was diagnosed with polio , so that he was later dependent on a wheelchair. The tsunami of December 26, 2004 destroyed his diving school near Hikkaduwa on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka; it was rebuilt a little later.

Clarke died in March 2008 in a hospital in Sri Lanka where he was being treated for breathing problems.

Science fiction writer

Clarke's work had a formative influence on the genre of science fiction. Many subsequent authors cite him as a role model. He was one of the scientific and technical visionaries of the genre. His novels and stories are characterized by technical achievements and reaching for the stars. With its strong scientific and technical orientation, Clarke's fiction work belongs to the sub-genre of hard science fiction . Clarke also repeatedly occupied himself with the possibilities of human evolution, for example in two of his most important novels The Last Generation ( Childhoods End ) and 2001: A Space Odyssey .

Many of Clarke's works are based on current scientific knowledge and applications. You play in a not far distant future and describe technology that is already possible or at least conceivable from today's perspective. Typical topics here are the exploration or settlement of the moon or other planets in the solar system. In addition, there are works that are set in a distant future or have technical developments on the subject that far exceed today's possibilities.

Clarke published early works in some fanzines as early as the late 1930s. His first commercial publication was the short story Loophole , which appeared in Astounding Science Fiction magazine in 1946 . In the short story Technical Error , which appeared in 1950 under the title The Reversed Man in the magazine Thrilling Wonder Stories , he describes how an employee of a power plant that works with superconducting materials is "twisted sideways".

In the 1950s, Clarke played a key role in showing the sea and the maritime in a futuristic novel (e.g. in Dolphin Island ) and was one of the first to be a diver out of sheer hobby. The Ghost from the Grand Banks is about the attempt to lift the Titanic . The idea of aquaculture , the systematic "farming" of the world's oceans, can be traced back to his work.

In the early novel Childhood's End (1953), Clarke developed the idea of ​​an all-encompassing and overwhelming power or intelligence that permeates and influences the universe. The novel is also strongly influenced by Clarke's preoccupation with the supernatural .

Clarke's best-known work is probably 2001: A Space Odyssey . The novel was based on the script developed together with Stanley Kubrick for the film of the same name from 1968, which in turn is based in part on several short stories by Clarke, including The Sentinel from 1948 and Encounter at Dawn from 1950. The three follow-up novels ( 2010: Odyssey Two , 2061 - Odyssey Three and 3001: The Final Odyssey ) were also successful, but less so than the original work.

Another major work by Clarke is the four-volume Rama cycle, the first part of which, Rendezvous with Rama (English: Rendezvous with 31/439 ) was published in 1973. The subsequent volumes, which were created in collaboration with Gentry Lee , were published from 1989 to 1993. In this work, Clarke once again links the topic of "intruders into the solar system" with the topos of the overpowering extraterrestrial intelligence.

The trilogy A Time's Odyssey ( Guardian Cycle ), published between 2004 and 2007 in collaboration with Stephen Baxter , also takes up the motif of an extraterrestrial intelligence.

Clarke's work also contains elements of humor. In 1957 published short story collection Tales from the White Hart (dt 1984th: Stories from the white deer ) are scientific findings on seemingly logical manner but with absurd, partly applied catastrophic consequences.

Clarke also dealt extensively with the possibilities of science and technology outside of his fiction works. He was one of the first to describe and calculate the idea of using geostationary satellites for technical communication. In 1945 his essay Extra-terrestrial Relays - Can Rocket Stations Give World-wide Radio Coverage? in the scientific journal Wireless World ; (see diagram). In 1964 he saw how this idea was put into practice with Syncom 3 . The geostationary orbit is also called the Clarke Belt or Clarke Orbit in the English-speaking world .

In the essayistic work Profil der Zukunft , published for the first time in 1962 , he takes the view that future prognoses often suffer from a lack of courage and imagination, that predictions are consequently often more pessimistic than too optimistic. In this context, he set up the first of the three “ Clarke's Laws ”, which are among the most cited basic rules of science fiction today. While some of his own predictions, such as manned space travel and the exploration and settlement of other celestial bodies, were in retrospect too optimistic, he was quite precise with other predictions. This is how he described today's Internet quite precisely as early as 1964.

Clarke was not the first to describe the possibility of a space elevator , but his novel Elevator to the Stars (1979) ensured that this concept was received by a broader public for the first time.

Awards and honors

Clarke's works have received numerous awards, including the Hugo Award , the Nebula Award and the Locus Award , the most prestigious prizes in science fiction.

For his life's work, Clarke received the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award in 1986 and was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 1997 . In 2004 Clarke received the Robert A. Heinlein Award for his "persistent works of visionary but at the same time readable speculative science fiction".

Arthur C. Clarke was awarded the Kalinga Prize for Popularizing Science in 1961.

Both an asteroid (4923) Clarke and a species of dinosaur ( Serendipaceratops arthurcclarkei) were named after Clarke. Clarke was a member of the Skeptics Society , which promotes skeptical and scientific thinking.

1989 Clarke was as Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) awarded before he in 2000 in recognition of his literary and scientific creation as a Knight Bachelor for beaten knights with which the suffix "Sir" is connected. Since his health did not allow him to travel to England for the ceremony, the UK High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Colombo presided over the ceremony.

The 2001 Mars Odyssey mission is named after his novel 2001: A Space Odyssey .

On November 14, 2005, Sri Lanka awarded him the highest civil order, the Sri Lankabhimanya (The Pride of Sri Lanka) , in recognition of his contribution to research and technology and his commitment to his adopted country.
