Hugo Award
The Hugo Award (actually: Science Fiction Achievement Award ) is a reader award that has been awarded since 1953 . It is named after Hugo Gernsback , the founder of the term science fiction .
history
It is considered to be one of the most important prizes in SF literature and is awarded annually by the participants of the Worldcons , usually for works that were published in the past year. Although the focus is on SF literature, the Hugo Award is also given for works from the field of fantasy literature.
In addition to the Hugo, other awards will also be presented at Worldcon: the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for the best new author. From 1974 to 1981 the Gandalf Award was also presented.
The 1953 award ceremony was originally intended as a one-off event. After a one-year break, the award has been presented annually since 1955. So far three times, namely in 1996, 2001 and 2004, works that would have been made exactly 50 years earlier have been awarded the Retro Hugo Award . In 2007 this scheme could have been followed again, since 1957 Hugo was only awarded to magazines. In 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2019 Retro Hugo were awarded for works published 75 years earlier.
