biography

Jack Vance with Banjo and Kazoo (1979)

Vance grew up on a farm in the San Joaquin Valley . He studied mining and physics at the University of California , then journalism. During the Second World War he was in the service of the American Merchant Navy and after the war did a number of unskilled and temporary jobs until he decided to become a writer. With his friends and colleagues Frank Herbert and Poul Anderson he lived in a houseboat for a time. He last lived with his family in Oakland, California. Due to his almost complete blindness , he was severely limited in his work, so that the intervals between his book publications grew larger and larger.

His SF career began in 1945 with his story The World Thinker , which appeared in Thrilling Wonder Stories .

In 1950 he wrote an episode novel called The Dying Earth , which contains both science fiction and fantasy elements. In the short story Mazirian the Magician published in the first volume, Vance describes a form of magic that is based on memorizing spells, but which is used up after use. This idea was the model for the game designers Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson when developing the magic system of their role-playing game rules Dungeons & Dragons . This form of magic is therefore also called Vancian Magic or Vancian Spellcasting in the fantasy field .

Since 1957 he also wrote detective novels , mostly under his real name. In 1961 he received the Edgar Allan Poe Award for The Man in the Cage , the Mystery Writers of America award for crime fiction.

From the mid-1960s onwards, he turned from the short stories that had previously had priority to the novel. These were often parts of large-scale series such as the tetralogy about Tschai (in Germany only the first three novels were initially published in Terra Nova ), the Durdane trilogy and the Demon Prince series.

He achieved greater fame especially in France and the Netherlands .

style

Although Vance wrote science fiction, he attached little importance to typical science fiction elements - such as spaceships and space battles - and focused on his characters, especially the evil and wicked that humans are capable of.

reception

Dan Simmons said of Vance that it was “a revelation to him, much like Proust or Henry James. Suddenly you're in the middle of it all. It gives you a glimpse of entire worlds in a perfectly coordinated language. Had he been born south of the border, he would have been nominated for the Nobel Prize. "

Michael Chabon said, “Jack Vance is the most annoying of all the cases where writers don't get the honor they deserve. If The Last Castle or The Dragon Masters were called Italo Calvino , or just someone else's name, one would recognize his deep thoughts, but because he is Jack Vance and is published by Amazing Anyway, this is not possible . "

Neil Gaiman said of The Dying Earth , “I fell in love with the style of prose. He was elegant, intelligent, every word seemed to know exactly what it was doing. "
