George Mann

George Mann (born December 22, 1978 in Darlington , County Durham ) is a British science fiction writer, editor, lexicographer and comic book scenarist . He is known as the author of the Mammoth Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and the steampunk series about investigators Newbury and Hobbes.

Life

Mann's first book was the ambitious project of a comprehensive science fiction lexicon: The Mammoth Encyclopedia of Science Fiction was published in 2001 and contained the four parts on 606 pages

  • Terms, Themes and Devices in Science Fiction and
  • Societies and Awards .

As a science fiction writer, he debuted with the space opera The Human Abstract (2004), followed by two novels from the environment of the British television series Doctor Who settled Time Hunter series of Telos Publishing ( The Severed Man , 2004, and Child of Time , 2007, with David J. Howe) Other works by Mann in the Doctor Who universe are the novels Paradox Lost (2011) and Engines of War (2014), as well as two non-fiction books about the universe of the Doctor and about the Daleks together with Justin Richards, as well as several comic book scenarios and an audio book.

He made a name for himself as a steampunk author with the series about investigators Newbury and Hobbes, who go in search of serial killers and other criminals in a fantastically alienated London. The first novel in the series ( The Affinity Bridge ) was published in 2008. Another series, The Ghost , is set a few decades later in a post-steampunk version of New York in the 1920s.

More books by Mann are set in the world of Warhammer 40,000 . He was the editor of a series of science fiction and fantasy anthologies for Solaris Books , founded in 2007 as the imprint of a subsidiary of Games Workshop , the maker of Warhammer 40,000 , which also includes The Black Library , where Mann's Warhammer 40,000 Audio books appeared. Other anthologies included stories with the character of the detective Sexton Blake and Arthur Conan Doyles Sherlock Holmes .
