Edgar Allan Poe Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Edgar Allan Poe Award ( Edgar for short , also called Mystery Writers of America Award ) is the world's most popular and at the same time most important award for criminal literary works in the USA . It has been awarded by the Mystery Writers of America (MWA) at the Edgar Awards Banquet since 1946 . It is named after Edgar Allan Poe , who is considered the founder of modern crime literature .

Categories / selection process

The Edgar Allan Poe Award is presented annually in several categories. There are currently 13 categories; a prize is not necessarily awarded in every category every year. A separate jury is set up for each category . The General Awards Chair , the chairman of the Edgar selection procedure, which is responsible for the entire coordination, appoints the heads of the individual juries for this purpose. The leaders, in turn, select four other jurors for their jury. Only active MWA members are eligible as jurors. The large number of novels forced the MWA to enlarge the jury in the Best Novel category : there, eight additional judges instead of four have to sort through and select the best works. The jury members of a category stay in close contact throughout the year and constantly communicate about the works they have already read. Each juror creates a so-called top ten list (points are awarded from 10 to 1 point). At the end of the year, this list becomes the basis for a joint TOP Ten list in a first round of voting by the jury . Afterwards, each member has the opportunity to review and correct their own assessment again. The final nominations will then be determined in a second voting round. At the beginning of the new year, the MWA National Board will select the respective winners of a category, who will be honored during the Edgar Awards Banquet .

Lifetime Achievement Award - Grand Master Award

The Grand Master Award is the highest distinction and the most prestigious award from the MWA. Authors must not only have achieved special achievements in the crime genre during their literary life to date, but must also be characterized by consistently high literary quality. And so the names in the following list almost read like a "Who's Who in Crime" .

In the years 1956–1957, 1960, 1965, 1968 and 1977 the Grand Master Award was not given. It was not until 1979 that there was a regular, annual presentation at the Edgar Awards Banquet . Two or three award winners have been honored over several years.

Robert L. Fish Memorial Award

The Robert L. Fish Memorial Award is an award for young American writers of crime short stories. It has been awarded annually since 1984 (exception: 1992) by the Mystery Writers of America on the occasion of the presentation of the Edgar Allan Poe Awards at the Edgar Awards Banquet . The award is named after the US author Robert L. Fish (1912–1981). A cash prize will be donated from the writer's estate; in addition, the winner receives a certificate from the MWA. The Alaskan journalist Mike Doogan, who was nominated for the important Shamus Award in the category Best First Novel in 2007 for his first novel Lost Angel , recently demonstrated that the winners can also be successful with a "great novel" .

The Simon & Schuster - Mary Higgins Clark Award

The Mary Higgins Clark Award is a special prize for women authors whose novels are in the literary tradition of Mary Higgins Clark . In cooperation with the MWA, the publishing house Simon & Schuster , New York, sponsors an annual novel that is submitted for the Edgar Allan Poe Award in the categories Best Novel, Best First Novel or Best Paperback Original . Identical to all categories of the Edgar Award, an MWA jury is appointed, which makes the selection on the basis of specified criteria (female protagonist of certain age, no brutal violence, no pronounced sex, etc.). The reason for the (originally) 10-year limited sponsorship is the 25-year successful collaboration between the publisher and the author, which was achieved in 2001 and who was president of MWA in 1987 and who also received the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America in 2000 .

Between 1946 and 1960, the Mystery Writers of America awarded an Edgar Award for the best detective radio play or radio play series broadcast. In 1956, 1957 and 1959 the prize was not awarded. The technical development and increasing importance of television caused the MWA to discontinue this category. The teams of authors Robert Arthur / David Kogan (1950 + 1953) and James Moser / Jack Webb (1951 + 1952) were awarded twice in the Best Radio Drama category.

Best Literary Criticism - Best Outstanding Mystery Criticism

Between 1946 and 1967, the Mystery Writers of America presented an Edgar Award for best literary criticism. While this was done annually until 1955, there were only four awards after that until 1967. The journalist, translator, author and later co-founder of the Mystery Writers of America and namesake of the Anthony Award , Anthony Boucher , was honored with most of the awards. But other prominent names can also be found in the list of critics: For example Helen McCloy , who was awarded the Nero Wolfe Award in 1980 for her novel Burn This .
