Stein first worked as a journalist, critic and editor of New York newspapers before he found his way into the detective novel . He first wrote the novels Sprials (1930) and he Body Speaks (1931), experimenting with the technique of the inner monologue , as well as an entertainment novel ( Bachelor's Wife . 1932). The first two novels were successful with literary criticism, but not with audiences. Stein then turned to the genre of the detective novel ; In 1935 he published the novel Murder at the Piano under the pseudonym George Bagby . His best-known figure is the New York inspector Schmitty , about whom he wrote over 50 novels under the pseudonym George Bagby . Further series were created around the forensic-archaeological investigators Tim Mulligan and Elsie Mae Hunt and the engineer Matt Herridge. Sitting Up Dead comes from the Herridge series and was freely screened in the television series 77 Sunset Strip under the title A Bargain in Tombs .

In 1979 Stein received the Edgar Award .
