The DuMont Verlag GmbH & Co. KG (formerly DuMont Literature and Art Publishing ) is an in Cologne beheimateter German book publisher and belongs to the media group M. DuMont . The publishing director is Sabine Cramer . The commercial director is Markus Stache.

history

Marcus DuMont , the eponymous founder of this publishing group, was already a bookseller in Cologne before he entered the newspaper business with the takeover of the Kölnische Zeitung (1805). In 1956, DuMont Buchverlag was finally founded by Ernst Brücher , initially as a pure art book and calendar publisher. In the 1970s, travel guides became the most important program segment. Since 1998 literary titles have also been published.

In 2001 the publishing house was divided into the labels DuMont Literature and Art Publishing, DuMont Reiseverlag and DuMont monte (calendar) according to its program pillars. At the end of 2004, Dumont Reiseverlag was taken over by Mair Verlag, which from then on operated as MairDumont ; Dumont monte was spun off as an independent sister publisher under the name DuMont Kalenderverlag.

The name of the remaining publisher was changed back to DuMont Buchverlag GmbH & Co. KG in mid-2008.

Conception today

Today DuMont Buchverlag combines the program areas of literature, art and non-fiction. The literature program includes contemporary German and international literature, tension literature and poetry. The non-fiction book contains political non-fiction books, biographies, cultural history, but also travel literature and popular science. The art program includes high-quality illustrated books on art history from the Renaissance to the present day, artist monographs, works on art theory, photography as well as design and architecture. Since spring 2010, DuMont Buchverlag has also presented its own paperback program. This program consists of original editions, German first editions, paperback editions of our own hardcover titles and individual, selected third-party licenses.

According to their own statement, a total of around 120 titles appear annually. In 2008 the publisher was number 1 on the German bestseller list for months with the title Wetlands by Charlotte Roche . DuMont Buchverlag is the German publisher of the international bestselling authors Haruki Murakami , Thomas Mullen , Meg Wolitzer and Michel Houellebecq .
