John Creasey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Creasey (born September 17, 1908 in Southfields ( Surrey ), † June 9, 1973 in New Hall, Bodenham ( Salisbury, Wiltshire )) was an English writer . He was considered extremely productive and wrote under many different pseudonyms in more than 40 creative years over 600 novels .

Life

General

John Creasey was born to Ruth and Joseph Creasey . Together with eight siblings, he grew up in modest circumstances. He attended London's Fulham Elementary School and Sloane School . At the age of 14 he left school and worked in various office jobs and as a salesman. At the same time he tried his hand at writing - initially with little success. In 1930 he published his first crime novel Seven Times Seven .

In 1935 he gave up his other professional activities and devoted himself only to writing. Creasey developed into a prolific writer and brought it to 1937 alone to 29 book publications. His literary focus was on crime and espionage novels .

Creasey was married four times and had three sons. From the first marriage with Margaret Elizabeth Cooke came son Colin ; The sons Martin and Richard came from the second marriage with Jeanne Williams . The third marriage to Evelyn Fudge lasted 29 years . A month before his death, Creasey married a fourth time, Diana Hamiltonn Farrell .

John Creasey lived in England and Arizona . His life in Arizona inspired him to write the Wild West novels, which he wrote and published in his English homeland.

Political activities

Even under the impression of the Second World War , Creasey was also involved in the political field - regardless of the time invested in his enormous writing. Several times he was unsuccessful in the elections to the British Parliament . In January 1966 he founded the All-Party Alliance . The aim of this liberal movement was to unite candidates beyond party affiliation, social class and ideology according to the principle of selecting the best on a single list for parliament.

Crime Writers' Association (CWA)

On November 5, 1953, at the instigation of John Creasey , British crime writers met in London's National Liberal Club to found an association of authors, the British Crime Writers' Association (CWA). The aim was to improve the general public image of crime fiction and its writers. John Creasey was elected first chairman of the CWA and held that office until 1957.

In 1973, the year John Creasey died, the CWA first awarded a literary prize for the best first novel of the previous year and named the award after its founder: the John Creasey Memorial Award . Due to a change of sponsor, the award has been called New Blood Dagger since 2006 , and since 2009 it has been mainly referred to as The John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger .

Pseudonyms

(As far as editions appeared under different pseudonyms and / or titles, this was noted in the sections)

There is no absolutely reliable, recognized number about the correct number of John Creasey's pseudonyms. However, far more than 20 can be assumed. The reluctance of the British publishers to publish Creasey's prolific writing exclusively under his real name is understandable.

The following applies to the pseudonyms shown here:

  • The pseudonym Margaret Cole assigned in the John Creasey short biography of the Finnish Kirjasto website cannot be traced in Scandinavian and English-language association catalogs; it is therefore not listed as a pseudonym of John Creasey and the works are not reproduced.
  • In Germany, the Deutsche Nationalbibliografie (DNB) consistently assigned the pseudonym John Tiger as a person to Creasey . After intervention, the DNB reversed this in October 2010; The lack of clear biographical information in many works was the decisive factor. The pseudonym was also used by the American writer Walter (Hermann) Wager (1924–2004); it was also used in Germany for a series of booklets and library novels. John Tiger is therefore not listed as a pseudonym of Creasey and a reproduction of the works previously ascribed in the DNB is dispensed with.
  • French Wikipedia lists Margaret Ranger as a pseudonym in the article about John Creasey. On the other hand, the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) does not assign any work to this name and other international library catalogs also show no evidence of a possible assignment to John Creasey. Margaret Ranger is therefore not listed as a Creasey pseudonym.

Some of Creasey's pseudonyms reveal their origins. In 1938 he lived in Ashe ( Hampshire) in the south of England . After the name of his place of residence at the time, he constructed the pseudonym Gordon Ashe , under which he wrote the Patrick Dalish series from 1939 until his death .

For the pseudonym of his Gideon series as JJ Marric , Creasey used his family's initials: his own first name J (ohn), the first name of his wife J (eanne) and of his sons Mar (tin) and Ric (hard). Some of his novels Creasey wrote under the name of his wife as M (argaret) E (lizabeth) Cooke or romantic works as Margaret Cooke .

Detective novels also as: Gordon Ashe ; ME Cooke ; Norman Deane ; Robert Caine Frazer ; Michael Halliday (not in USA); Charles Hogarth ; Brian Hope ; Colin Hughes ; Kyle Hunt ; Abel Mann ; Peter Manton ; JJ Marric ; Richard Martin ; Rodney Mathieson ; Anthony Morton ; Jeremy York (USA only).

Romantic novels as: Margaret Cooke ; Henry St. John Cooper ; Elise Fécamps .

Non-fiction also as: Credo .

Sports Novels as: Patrick Gill ; James Marsden ; Jimmy Wilde .

Wild West Novels as: Ken Ranger ; Tex Riley ; William K. Reilley .

Awards

In addition, several of Creasey's novels received high recognition in international leaderboards. He got four placements in the popular Anthony Boucher's Best / Importing Selections 1942–1968 : 1964 with Look Three Ways at Murder (German: A murder rarely comes alone) and 1967 with Sly as a Serpent (as Kyle Hunt) . As early as 1955 he was represented in The Gelignite Gang (UK: Inspector West Makes Haste) and in 1956 with Beauty Queen Killer (also as So Young, So Cold, So Fair . UK: A Beauty for Inspector West) in the Boucher 56 import end list .

Detective writer and critic HRF Keating immortalized Creasey as JJ Marric with Gideon's Week Best Novel for 1956 in its Top 100 Detective Novels listing from 1845 to 1986.

Robin Winks (completely: Robin William Evert Winks) , professor of history at Yale University from 1957 to 2003 and author of several non-fiction books on the crime genre, Creasey was twice in his favorites list: the novels Gideon's River and Gideon's Week , both under the Pseudonym JJ Marric appeared.
