John D. MacDonald

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Dann MacDonald (born July 24, 1916 in Sharon , Pennsylvania , † December 28, 1986 in Milwaukee ) was an American writer . He has published a number of crime novels starring the hero Travis McGee , several science fiction novels, and hundreds of short stories from various genres.

Life

MacDonald graduated from Harvard University , the specialist business administration and graduated with MBA from. During the Second World War he served in the Far East for the American secret service OSS . There he wrote a short story in his spare time, which he sent to his wife for her pleasure. She allegedly submitted the story to a magazine which she immediately published without John MacDonald even knowing about the whole thing. In any case, upon his return from the war, MacDonald immediately began working full-time as a professional writer of detective , science fiction , and western stories for American pulp magazines . When the sale shape of the pocket book ( paperback ) had established itself in the US, he made it into the class of "real" novelists. His first long novel was called The Brass Cupcake from 1950.

The most famous of MacDonald's heroes was Travis McGee, who made his first appearance in the 1964 novel The Deep Blue Good-by . In the same year he received the renowned Grand prix de littérature policière for his novel A key to the suite . MacDonald McGee was last investigated in 1985, in The Lonely Silver Rain . Each of the 21 McGee novels has a color in the title. As a companion figure, McGee is supported by his sidekick "Meyer", a retired economist. McGee lives on his houseboat, Busted Flush , which he won in poker (hence the name) and which is anchored at F-18 in the Bahia Mar Marina in Fort Lauderdale .

MacDonald's admirers, among them Stephen King and Lee Child , emphasize that his novels offer not only the intelligent, coherent and suspenseful plot but also a precise insight into the society of Florida in the respective time context.

In addition to the McGee novels, John MacDonald also had great success with his novel The Executioners (1957). In 1962 the story was filmed under the title A Bait for the Beast ( Cape Fear ), a remake took place in 1991 as Cape Fear ( Cape Fear ).
