Robert Reginald

Robert Reginald (born February 11, 1948 in Fukuoka , Japan ; died November 20, 2013 in San Bernardino , California ) was an American bibliographer , author, editor and publisher in the field of science fiction and fantasy . His real name was Michael Roy Burgess , but he published mostly under the pseudonym Robert Reginald . In addition to this, he used a number of other pseudonyms.

Life

Burgess was born on Kyushu Island in Japan where his father, 1st Lt. Walter Burgess was stationed with the US Air Force at Itazuke Air Force Base , now Fukuoka Airport . His mother was Betty Jane, née Kapel. In 1949 his father was relocated to Oakland , California, then to locations in Massachusetts , Izmir in Turkey and finally to Wichita , Kansas, where Burgess attended Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School from 1961 . After his father left the Air Force, the family moved to Spokane , Washington , where Burgess attended Gonzaga Preparatory School , a Catholic private school.

From 1965, Burgess studied English and Ancient Greek on a scholarship at Gonzaga University in Spokane. In 1968 he published his first article, a critical treatise on the history of science fiction, under the pseudonym R. Reginald , which he decided to use for his publications from then on. In the same year he attended his first SF convention , the BayCon in Berkeley , and considered the project of an SF biobibliography ;

“It occurred to me that no one had ever compiled a 'Who's Who' of the science-fiction field. I bounced the idea off Emil on a bus ride from San Francisco to Berkeley, and he thought it was a good idea. So I did it. I learned more from putting that first book together than from any writing class I took at Gonzaga, however worthy. "

“It struck me that no one had put together a“ Who's Who ”of science fiction. On a bus trip from San Francisco to Berkeley, I ventilated the idea with Emil [= Emil Petaja ], who thought it was good. She was too. While writing this first book, I learned more than any valuable course in Gonzaga. "

He sent 500 questionnaires to SF authors and submitted the result, a collection of 483 bibliographies and 308 biographies, as a study paper. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1969 and began studying library science at the University of Southern California on a fellowship . In the same year he met Douglas Menville know, with whom he was to publish a number of books.

In 1970 Reginald graduated with a master's degree and took a position as a librarian at California State University (Cal State) in San Bernardino , where he was to work until 1991. The result of his study project was published in 1970 as Stella Nova: The Contemporary Science Fiction Authors under Reginald's imprint Unicorn & Sons . Together with Menville he was the editor of the fantasy magazine Forgotten Fantasy: Classics of Science Fiction and Fantasy , which was discontinued after five issues, but the collaboration continued: From 1971 to 1980, Reginald was together with Menville the editorial team of the publishing house Newcaste Publishing , where the Newcastle Forgotten Fantasy Library series appeared, reprinting the works of unjustly forgotten authors such as Henry Rider Haggard and William Morris at the time.

With the publisher Gale Research concluded Reginald 1,970 contracts for two projects from bibliographic, namely a comprehensive bibliography of SF literature and a bibliography of published 1939-1959 paperback series that as Cumulative Paperback Index, 1939-1959 appeared 1973rd

In 1974 he got the permanent position at Cal State. In the same year he began to publish a SF book series together with Menville at Arno Press . Stella Nova also appeared there in 1975 in the second edition under the title Contemporary Science Fiction Authors .

In 1975 Reginald founded the small publisher The Borgo Press with the royalties from Gale , with distribution initially through Newcastle Publishers . The following year he married Mary Alice Rogers, née Wickizer, who had two children from his first marriage. By 1999, when the publisher was liquidated, Reginald and Mary Burgess had published over 300 titles at Borgo Press . In 2003, Borgo Press was revived as an imprint by Wildside Press .

1979 Gale then published Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature. A Checklist, 1700–1974 with contemporary science fiction authors II , in addition to the earlier works by Everett Franklin Bleiler and Donald H. Tuck, remains an indispensable reference work, especially due to the relatively detailed information on family and curriculum vitae in the short biographies and the supplementary questionnaire answers of the biographed. The follow-up volume Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature 1975-1991 appeared in 1992 and was nominated for the 1993 Locus Award .

In 1981, Burgess became an associate professor and in 1984 an associate professor at Cal State. Most recently he was the head librarian of the Pfau Library there . In 2010 he retired. In 2013, Burgess died of heart failure at the age of 65 after suffering a severe heart attack in 2003.
