Spokane [ spoʊˈkæn ] is a city in the US state of Washington .

Spokane is the capital of the county of the same name and the largest city in east Washington. Your name is based on the Indian tribe of Spokan which populated the area until the arrival of the Europeans.

Spokane is the second largest city in Washington (after Seattle ) with around 216,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area (estimate by the US Census Bureau 2016) and around 560,000 in the metropolitan area .

geography

Spokane is located at the eastern end of the Columbia Plateau on the border with the Rocky Mountains . The Spokane River flows through the city . There are two striking waterfalls in Spokane , the Upper Spokane Falls and the Lower Spokane Falls .

history

The city was founded as Spokane Falls in 1881 and did not get its current name until 1891. Between 1900 and 1910 the population increased from 36,848 to 104,402 inhabitants. In 1974 the world exhibition , the Expo '74, was held here.

About 8000 Indians live in Spokane, who in turn belong to 127 tribes.

education

The city is the seat of Gonzaga University and Whitworth College . Washington State University, based in Pullman, and Eastern Washington University, based in Cheney, also have a branch here.

Sports

The comparatively small Gonzaga University attracted attention nationwide through the success of its basketball department at the NCAA tournaments. Every year since 1999, the Bulldogs playing in the West Coast Conference have made it to the finals of the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament , the highest tournament at the college level. The Bulldogs spawned several NBA players including John Stockton , Adam Morrison and Ronny Turiaf . The Gonzaga football department comes from national player Brian Ching , among others , from the baseball department Jason Bay .

In addition to the college teams, there are also professional teams. These include in baseball, the Spokane Indians ( Northwest League ), a farm team of the Texas Rangers , in arena football , the Spokane Shock ( Arena Football League ) and in football the Spokane Spiders ( USL Premier Development League ). In ice hockey, the Spokane Flyers ( Western Hockey League ) played in the city from 1980 to 1982 , and the Spokane Chiefs (Western Hockey League) since 1985 .

In popular sports there are two big events in Spokane every year, the Lilac Bloomsday Run on the first Sunday in May and the Hoopfest , which takes place every year on the last weekend in June. The Lilac Bloomsday Run runs 12 km through the city. An average of 45,000 runners take part; the event reached its record in 1996 with more than 61,000 participants. The Hoopfest is a basketball tournament in which teams of three compete against each other on a smaller playing field. The number of participants has leveled off at around 6,000 teams (teams of three or, with substitutes, teams of four).

Spokane is connected to Seattle to the west by I-90 , the longest interstate in the United States, and to the US states of Idaho and Montana to the east . The Spokane International Airport is the second busiest airport in Washington State. Since it is the only major airport in a wide area, it serves the entire eastern part of Washington state and also northern Idaho. In addition, Spokane is connected to Chicago , Seattle and Portland (Oregon) by the railroad company Amtrak with their long-distance train connection " Empire Builder " .

sons and daughters of the town

The list contains an alphabetical overview of personalities born in Spokane. It is irrelevant whether the people later had their sphere of activity there or not. Many moved away after their birth and became known elsewhere. The list does not claim to be complete.

Bing Crosby (1903–1977) is often named as the city's most famous son. His family moved to Spokane in 1906. Crosby studied at the local Gonzaga University from 1920.
