Career

youth

At the age of 15, Turiaf moved to Paris to attend the famous Paris sports school " INSEP " (Institut National des Sports et de l'Education Physique). A year later he was called up to the French U-18 national team and in 2000 he won the U-18 European Championship alongside Tony Parker , Boris Diaw and Mickaël Piétrus . In 2001 he went to Gonzaga University in Spokane , Washington . In his senior college year, Turiaf was named best player of the 2004/05 season in the West Coast Conference .

NBA

In the 2005 NBA Draft Turiaf was then drafted 37th by the Los Angeles Lakers . A heart problem was discovered during a health check during the preparation for the season, so that Turiaf had to undergo an operation and take a six-month break. In the second half of his rookie season , he came to a few short-term assignments. On average, he got 2 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. Nevertheless, he was nominated for the French national team for the 2006 World Basketball Championship .

The next 2006/07 NBA season was better for Turiaf. He got significantly more playing time, also due to injuries to teammates and played 72 of 82 NBA games. He finished the season with an average of 5.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game.

At the 2007 European Basketball Championships Turiaf was back in the squad of the French national team.

In the 2007/08 season Turiaf got more playing time again, especially in the second half of the season, as Andrew Bynum, the starting center of the LA Lakers, injured himself . Turiaf even played a few games in the Lakers' starting five . Turiaf paid back this trust of Lakers coach Phil Jackson with consistently good performances and so he was one of the guarantors for the Lakers' finals entry in 2008. In the finals Turiaf played solidly, but did not show any outstanding performances. The series lost the Lakers 2-4 against the Boston Celtics .

In the summer of 2008 Turiaf's contract with the Lakers ran out. With Andrew Bynum's health improving significantly and a full recovery looking likely by next season, the Lakers were unwilling to pay the $ 17 million bid for Turiaf by the Golden State Warriors for four years. So Turiaf moved from Los Angeles to Oakland, just a few hours' drive away . In the summer of 2009 Turiaf took part in the European Championship with the French national team.

On July 9, 2010, the Frenchman was traded together with Anthony Randolph and Kelenna Azubuike to New York for the previous top performer David Lee .

Turiaf was injured during the 2011 European Championship finals , so he saw the French national team win the silver medal and qualify for the Olympic Games in Lithuania without any effort. He then joined the French record champions ASVEL from Lyon , where Tony Parker is president and for whom Parker was also active during the lockout , for the time of the lockout at the beginning of the 2011/12 NBA season .

In 2011 he was transferred from New York to Washington, where he only played four games and was re-traded in March 2012. He has been on the Denver Nuggets roster ever since . Turiaf did not play a single game for the Nuggets, however, and the Nuggets terminated his contract in March 2012. He was then signed for the remainder of the season by the Miami Heat , where he quickly became a starter. Turiaf celebrated the NBA championship in 2012 with the Heat. For the 2012/2013 season Turiaf moved within the league to the Los Angeles Clippers . In the 2013/14 NBA Turiaf was under contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. In the following season 2014/15 in a player swap to the Philadelphia 76ers , who, however, immediately gave up his services and released him from his contract.

On October 24, 2016, Turiaf announced his retirement from professional sports. He was plagued by hip problems for a long time, his last game was almost two years before the end of his career.
