The 2013-14 NBA season marked the National Basketball Association's 68th season . The champions were the San Antonio Spurs , who prevailed in the final against the defending champion Miami Heat .
Before the start of the season
New name for the New Orleans "Hornets"
In April 2013, the management in New Orleans changed its name to “Pelicans” (German: Pelicans) because the fan base could not identify with the name “Hornets” (German: Hornets), which they had brought with them from Charlotte. According to the team leadership, a pelican's external appearance is better suited to a coastal region.
NBA draft
The 2013 NBA Draft took place on June 27, 2013 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn , New York . In two draft rounds, the 30 NBA teams were able to secure the rights to 60 young players from the NCAA college league and abroad. The Canadian Anthony Bennett was selected as the first player. Behind him were Victor Oladipo and Otto Porter . Furthermore, Dennis Schröder from Braunschweig was drafted 17th by the Atlanta Hawks .
Important club changes
After only one season with the Los Angeles Lakers , Dwight Howard , who was arguably the best center in the league at the time , left the west coast again and joined the Houston Rockets .
The summer's blockbuster trade took place between the Brooklyn Nets and the Boston Celtics . So Boston Celtics got, among others, Gerald Wallace and Kris Humphries . The Brooklyn Nets old stars Kevin Garnett , Paul Pierce and Jason Terry .
In addition, the Brooklyn Nets signed Andrei Kirilenko from the Minnesota Timberwolves . This move caused quite a stir because Kirilenko was giving up a lot of money.
Nine years after his NBA triumph with the Detroit Pistons , then Finals MVP Chauncey Billups returned to Michigan from the Los Angeles Clippers .
Also after just one season, then also part of the Howard trade, Andre Iguodala left the Denver Nuggets and joined the Golden State Warriors . A total of six players and three teams were involved in this trade.
The New York Knicks strengthened themselves with Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors and Metta World Peace of the Los Angeles Lakers .
The German center Chris Kaman ( Dallas Mavericks ) moved to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Mavericks signed Monta Ellis from the Milwaukee Bucks and José Calderón from the Detroit Pistons .
Tim Ohlbrecht left the Houston Rockets after only three short appearances and was briefly under contract with the Philadelphia 76ers . Since November 2013 he has been playing again for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the D-League.
Another German ended up with the Los Angeles Lakers : Elias Harris signed a contract in Los Angeles after performing well in the NBA Summer League , but was dismissed by the Los Angeles Lakers a few weeks after the start of the season.
