Jimmy Butler III (born September 14, 1989 in Houston , Texas ) is an American basketball player who is currently under contract with the Miami Heat in the NBA .

Butler has been an NBA All-Star five times in his career and was named NBA Most Improved Player in 2015. With Team USA he also won the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games .

youth

Butler's father left the family when Butler was a toddler. At the age of 13 his mother showed no interest in him either and put him outside the door. In a summer basketball league before his senior year at Tomball High School, he was spotted playing a three-point match by Jordan Leslie, a football and basketball player at the school, and the two became friends. As a player at Tomball High, Butler averaged 19 points and 8 rebounds per game. In the 2006/07 season he was voted the most valuable player in his team.

college

After high school, Butler went to Tyler Junior College in Tyler . After his first season he could have gone to the University of Kentucky , where there was a high probability that he could have made the direct jump to the NBA, but he decided on Marquette University because he saw the best chance of a good academic degree there . In his freshman year he achieved an average of 5.6 points and 4 rebounds per game. For the 2009-10 season, Butler received the All-Big East Honorable Mention . He finished his senior year with 15.7 points, 2.3 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game.

NBA career

Chicago Bulls (2011-2017)

Butler was selected by the Chicago Bulls as the 30th choice in the 2011 NBA Draft . In his rookie year he was rarely used and ended the season with an average of just 2.6 points per game.

After Chicago Bulls veteran Luol Deng was out with an injury, Butler was given the opportunity to play more often and prove his skills. On January 19, 2013 Butler played for the first time in the starting lineup in the 85:82 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies . Despite this defeat, Butler delivered one of the best games of his career to date. Furthermore, teammate Richard Hamilton could not live up to the head coach's expectations and Butler secured a permanent position in the team, which he kept after Luol Deng's return. On April 9, 2013 Butler achieved a personal best of 28 points in a 101-98 loss to the Toronto Raptors . He played all 82 games this season and started 20 times.

Butler in a playoff game with the Bulls (2015)

The following season the Swingman finally established himself with the Bulls and started in all 67 games and came up with 13.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.9 steals. He was also called to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team for his good defense work . On December 18, 2014, Butler set another career record with 35 points in defeating the New York Knicks . In 2015, Butler was first invited to the NBA All-Star Game . Butler won the NBA Most Improved Player Award for Most Improved Player of the Season that season. He led the Bulls in scoring with 20.0 points per game and led them into the playoffs. On January 3, 2016, Butler broke the Bulls record for the most points in one half - in the second half of the game against the Toronto Raptors (115-113), he scored 40 points, one more than previous record holder Michael Jordan . On January 14, 2016, Butler set a personal career record of 53 points in the 115-111 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers . Michael Jordan recently scored that many points in the Bulls jersey. Butler was re-elected All-Star in 2016, but was forced to sit out due to a knee injury.

At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he won the gold medal with the US selection. He started the 2016/17 NBA season with the Bulls . The Bulls were reinforced with Rajon Rondo , Robin Lopez and Dwyane Wade . However, due to internal discrepancies, the team only came in eighth position in the east. In a game against the Charlotte Hornets on January 2, 2017, Butler scored 52 points, missing his previous season record by one point. At that time there were a lot of rumors about Butler. Nevertheless, Butler achieved the best points yield of his career with an average of 23.9 points.

Minnesota Timberwolves (2017-2018)

As part of the 2017 NBA draft , Butler was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves . In return, Kris Dunn , Zach LaVine and the draft rights to Lauri Markkanen moved to the Bulls. At the Wolves, Butler meets his former trainer Tom Thibodeau . On July 15, it was announced that he was not extending his contract with the Wolves by four years, but wanted to try his luck in the Free Agency in 2019.

Moved to the Philadelphia 76ers (since 2018)

Butler was transferred to the Philadelphia 76ers a few games after the start of the 2018/19 NBA season for Dario Saric , Jerryd Bayless and Robert Covington .
