Goran Dragić (born May 6, 1986 in Ljubljana ) is a Slovenian basketball player who is currently under contract with the Miami Heat in the North American professional league NBA . Like his brother Zoran Dragić , he also plays for the Slovenian national team .

Dragić won the NBA Most Improved Player Award in the 2013/14 season and was elected to the All-Star Team in 2018 .

Club career

Dragić began his career with the Slovenian second division club Ilirija Ljubljana before moving to Geoplin Slovan Ljubljana . In 2006 he was signed by the Spanish top club Saski Baskonia , better known as TAU Cerámica , but loaned to league rivals CB Murcia . After a year Dragić returned to Slovenia and moved to Union Olimpija Ljubljana . His performances there, including in the Euroleague , led the San Antonio Spurs to select him in the second round of the 2008 NBA draft . The Spurs immediately transferred the rights to Dragić to the Phoenix Suns , who took the point guard under contract.

NBA

After a rather disappointing debut season in which Phoenix missed the play-offs , Dragić reached the Western Conference Finals with the Suns in 2010 . He himself particularly attracted attention in the third game of the second round when he scored 23 points in the final quarter against the San Antonio Spurs.

On February 24, 2011 Dragić was transferred to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Aaron Brooks . For the time of the NBA lockout , he was briefly back for Saski Baskonia , who now appeared under the sponsor name Caja Laboral , active.

For the 2012/13 season Dragić returned to the Phoenix Suns after a year . There he should play as the successor to Steve Nash as point guard in the starting five . Dragić received a contract in Phoenix until 2016 and earned around 30 million US dollars during that time. While he was able to show new career records in the 2012/13 season in terms of average points and assists, he developed into the team's absolute leader in the following season . In February 2014 alone, Dragić increased his personal best in points three times in one game. For his increase in performance in the preseason he was finally awarded the NBA Most Improved Player Award and was also elected to the All-NBA Third Team .

In February 2015, just before the transfer deadline, Dragić was transferred to the Miami Heat together with his brother Zoran .

In 2018 he was called up to replace the injured Kevin Love in the NBA All-Star Game .

National team career

Dragić was appointed to the Slovenian national team for the first time in 2006 . He took part in the World Cup that year and the European Championships in 2007 , 2009 , 2011 , 2013 and 2017 , and was also in the Slovenian squad at the World Championships in 2010 and 2014 . At the EM 2013, in which Slovenia acted as host, Dragić was selected in the selection team of the top five players of the tournament. Dragić won the gold medal with the national team in Istanbul at the 2017 European Championships and was named the best player of the tournament.
