Dale Ellis (born August 6, 1960 in Marietta , Georgia ) is a retired American basketball player who played in the NBA between 1983 and 2000 . Ellis is considered one of the best points collectors in NBA history .

Career

Eliis was selected by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1983 NBA Draft . In his first three years in Dallas he could not recommend himself for the starting line-up, so he was transferred to the Seattle SuperSonics . In Seattle, Ellis immediately became the star of the team and increased his points count within a year from 7.1 points to 24.9 points per game. For this achievement he was awarded the NBA Most Improved Player Award . During his time with the Sonics, Ellis established himself as one of the most dangerous shooters in the league. 1988-89 he scored 27.9 points per game and was appointed to the NBA All-Star Game for the first time . In the All-Star Game, he scored 27 points for the Western Conference .

1991 he transferred to the Milwaukee Bucks for Ricky Pierce . Despite coming off the bench, Ellis consistently scored over 20 points per game. With his move to the San Antonio Spurs , Ellis also got his regular place on the starting grid back. He remained a constant scorer and reached the playoffs for the first time since 1989. Ellis then played for the Denver Nuggets for three years before returning to the Sonics in 1997 . Despite being 37 years old, Ellis was still a feared shooter, scoring 17 points per game and hitting nearly 50% of his threesomes.

Ellis spent his final NBA years in Milwaukee and the Charlotte Hornets before retiring at the age of 39.

Ellis scored 15.7 points and 3.5 rebounds in his 17-year career and hit 40.3% of his three-point throws. In the all-time list of the best, this hit rate puts him in eleventh place among the no longer active players (as of August 26, 2011) . In addition, Ellis holds the NBA record for the most played minutes in a game: In the 154-155 loss of his Sonics to the Bucks on November 9, 1989, Ellis was 69 minutes on the field and scored 53 points.
