Paul Clifton Anthony George (born May 2, 1990 in Palmdale , California ) is an American basketball player who has been active in the NBA since 2010 . George has been under contract with the Los Angeles Clippers since 2019 . Active from 2010 to 2017 with the Indiana Pacers , who drafted him in 2010 , then two years with the Oklahoma City Thunder . George has been an NBA All-Star 6 times in his career and was able to win the title of Most Improved Player in 2013.
NBA
After playing at Fresno State University for two years, George was selected 10th in the 2010 NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers . In his rookie season, George convinced with 7.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game and was subsequently appointed to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team .
On February 3, 2012, George set a career record of 30 points in defeating the Dallas Mavericks , including 7 converted threesomes. He also got 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. At the 2012 NBA All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk Contest , he finished second behind Jeremy Evans . In his sophomore year, George improved his stats to 12.1 points, 5.6 rebounds , 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game. With the Pacers he reached the second round of the play-offs .
At the start of the 2012 season, the Pacers' lead player, Danny Granger , injured himself , which meant that George had a particularly large share of the game. George improved significantly in his third NBA year and was nominated for the 2013 NBA All-Star Game as a result . On November 21, 2012 in the home game against the New Orleans Hornets he achieved a new personal best with 37 points and 9 successful three-point throws .
For his achievements in 2012/13, George was awarded the League's NBA Most Improved Player Award . He was also appointed to the All-NBA Third Team and the NBA All-Defensive Second Team . After the season, he signed a reported five-year contract for 90 million dollars . In 2014, George was first named to the starting grid of the NBA All-Star Game by NBA fans .
On August 1, 2014, George was seriously injured during a Team USA training game in Las Vegas when he broke his right lower leg while trying to block a lay-up from James Harden . On April 5, 2015, he returned to a game of his Pacers against the Miami Heat and scored 13 points in just under 14 minutes. He completed six season games for the Pacers, but could not help the Pacers to playoff qualification.
In the run-up to the 2015/16 season it was announced that George would play in the position of power forward at least temporarily, in accordance with the idea of small ball . On December 5, 2015, George set a new personal career record with 48 points in the 122-119 defeat of the Pacers against the Utah Jazz . In 2016 he was appointed to the starting line-up of the All-Star Game for the Eastern Conference. In the All-Star Game 2016, George scored 41 points, missing Wilt Chamberlain's record . This had scored 42 points in 1962. Nevertheless, George's selection lost to that of the Western Conference . George played a strong season, missed just one game of the season, set a career record with 23.1 points per game and led the Pacers into the playoffs. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he won the gold medal with the US selection. In the 2016/17 NBA season , George led the Pacers again into the playoffs, but retired with them in the first round. After he announced in the summer of 2017 that he would not renew his contract after the 2017/2018 season, George was transferred to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis . With the Thunder, George formed a kind of new "Big Three" with Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony . Started with great expectations, George failed with the Thunder but already in the first play-off against the Utah Jazz.
After the 2017/2018 season, George is a free agent and has the opportunity to look for a new team, but decided to sign a 4-year contract with Thunder. After the early exit in the 2019 playoffs, George asked the Thunder management for a trade and was transferred to the Los Angeles Clippers a little later .
