At the XXXI. Two basketball competitions were held at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . Twelve teams each took part in the men's and women's tournament. Nations that had qualified for at least one of these tournaments were entitled to have a selection of up to twelve players for this tournament.

The total number of participants therefore took part in this competition as active 288 people, 144 men and 144 women; A nation could therefore send a maximum of 12 men and 12 women as active participants. The women's group games were played in the Arena da Juventude , all other games of the two tournaments were played in the Arena Carioca 1 in the Parque Olímpico in the Barra da Tijuca district . The individual games were played between August 6 and August 21. The nations had to qualify with their selection teams through competitions organized by FIBA and their continental associations. Selections from officially German-speaking countries could not qualify for the tournament, only the two referees Robert Lottermoser and Anne Panther from Germany were also involved on the field as representatives of a German-speaking country.

mode

The Olympic basketball tournament began with group games as a simple round-robin tournament in two groups of six teams each. While the last two and penultimate in the group were eliminated from the tournament, the four best in the group continued to play in the knockout system from the quarter-finals . The final round matches were played in the crossover system, so that the first of a group played against the fourth of the other group and the second against the third of the other group in the quarterfinals.

Then the game was continued in such a way that the group winners, if they won their games, met in the finals at the earliest. The quarter-final losers were eliminated from the tournament, while the semi-final losers played off the bronze medal winners in the third-place match.
