Tavares Montgomery "Monty" Williams, Jr. (born October 8, 1971 in Fredericksburg , Virginia ) is a former American basketball player and current trainer in the NBA .

Player career

Williams played nine NBA seasons from 1994 to 2003. He played for the New York Knicks , San Antonio Spurs , Denver Nuggets , Orlando Magic and the Philadelphia 76ers . Despite his existing heart condition, he was selected as the 24th pick by the Knicks in the 1994 NBA Draft . In his NBA career, Williams played in 456 games and scored a total of 2,884 points. On April 8, 1997, he achieved a career high of 30 points as a player of the Spurs against the Denver Nuggets.

Coaching career

In 2005, Williams was hired by Nate McMillan as an assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers .

On January 7, 2010, he signed a 3-year coaching contract with the New Orleans Hornets , which now operate as the New Orleans Pelicans . He remained coach of the Pelicans until 2015 before they fired Williams due to unsuccessfulness. Shortly thereafter, he became an assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Thunder .
