  • May 5: In the Solent off Portsmouth, the first remains of wood are identified as belonging to the wreck of the Mary Rose, which sank in 1545 , and the modern rediscovery, which finally leads to the salvage of the shipwreck in 1982, begins.
  • November 24th: A man who calls himself Dan Cooper hijacks a Boeing 727 between Portland and Seattle , after receiving a ransom of $ 200,000 in Seattle, parachutes from a height of 3000 meters on the onward flight and never will again seen. To date, this is the only aircraft hijacking in the USA that has never been resolved.
