Spirituals

Growing up as a pastor's daughter, Kristin Asbjørnsen came into contact with religious music as a child. At the age of eleven, her father gave her a music cassette entitled Feelin 'Spirit , on which the Norwegian singer Marit Carlsen performed Afro-American spirituals . Years later, shortly before her death in 1990, she met the Chicago singer Ruth Reese . Reese, who had lived in Norway since 1960, taught her and bequeathed her an extensive songbook of mostly unknown spirituals. For the album Wayfaring Stranger , released in autumn 2006, Asbjørnsen arranged various spirituals from this Reese songbook. The singer performed with this program in 1998 with pianist Tord Gustavsen . For the album she played the tracks with Jostein Ansnes, with whom she also works on Dadafon , Jarle Bernhoft and Anders Engen. The album was also distributed outside of Norway from September 2007.
