from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hippocrates († 491 BC) was a tyrant of the city of Gela in Sicily.

Hippocrates was a brother of Cleandros , who from around 505 BC. Was the tyrant of Gela. Together with him he founded fortresses on the mountains north of Gela to protect the city. After the death of Cleandros in 498 BC After a brief civil war, Hippocrates succeeded him as the tyrant of Gela.

Hippocrates expanded the army, especially the mounted troops. He took on both Greeks and Sikelers . With these troops he moved over the mountains into the Chalcidian settlement area and conquered Naxos, Zankle and Leontinoi. There he appointed tyrants devoted to him. The planned conquest of Syracuse turned out to be impracticable, however, as he did not have a fleet and could not count on the support of the poorer sections of the population there. Through negotiations in 492 BC BC with the mediation of Corinth , however, he achieved that Kamarina was awarded to him. Hippocrates died shortly afterwards during a campaign against the Sikeler.
