Ketil Bjørnstad (born April 25, 1952 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian writer, poet, composer and pianist.

Life

Bjørnstad studied classical piano in Oslo, London and Paris. At the age of 16 he played Béla Bartók's 3rd piano concerto with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra . Later he worked across genres with musicians in the jazz and rock fields. His first album under his own name, Åpning , was recorded in 1973 with a quartet that included guitarist Jon Eberson , bassist Arild Andersen and drummer Jon Christensen . He is u. a. known for his collaboration with Terje Rypdal ( The Sea -Quartett and duo concerts) and several times at the Moers Festivaloccurred. His CD Floating from 2005 topped the jazz charts of the magazines Musikmarkt and Musikwoche.

In 1972 Bjørnstad made his debut as a writer with the poetry book Alene ut . He has published 32 books, mostly novels, but also collections of poetry and essays. In Germany he became known for his novel biographies about Edvard Munch (1995) and Edvard Grieg (1998). His novel Vindings Spiel was on the 2006 fiction bestseller list of Der Spiegel magazine . It was the first novel in a trilogy, the second volume of which was published in German in 2009 under the title Der Fluss and concluded in 2010 with The Woman in the Valley . With his trilogy Bjørnstad had achieved something great, wrote Peter Henning in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , "a story of the fruitless efforts to try to hold onto happiness."
