Jon Christensen (* 20th March 1943 in Oslo ; † 18th February 2020 ibid ) was a Norwegian jazz drummer , the "one of the first and one of the leaders of the broken swing in Europe" was.

Live and act

Christensen began playing the drums in 1959 as a self-taught and won a prize at the Norwegian amateur festival a year later. In early 1964 he played with Kenny Dorham in his hometown (of which there is a recording) and in the same year with Karin Krog at the festival in Antibes ; he then performed regularly with Jan Garbarek . In 1967 he worked with Steve Kuhn and Monica Zetterlund . He was recognized internationally through projects by George Russell (including performance in 1970 at the Berlin Jazz Festival ). At the beginning of the 1970s he became known to a wider circle in Central Europe through his participation in the groups of Garbarek and Terje Rypdal , and from 1974 also with the European quartet of Keith Jarrett , with Jan Garbarek and Palle Danielsson .

Christensen acted as a kind of house drummer for the ECM label for a while and has been on recordings with Eberhard Weber , Ralph Towner ( Solstice , 1974), Barre Phillips , Enrico Rava , John Abercrombie , Michael Mantler , Miroslav Vitouš , Rainer Brüninghaus , Charles Lloyd , Keith Jarrett, Ketil Bjørnstad , Jan Garbarek, Dino Saluzzi and Tomasz Stańko . In 1977 he founded his own group for the first time. He also worked with Sidsel Endresen and performed regularly with the trio of Bobo Stenson and Terje Rypdal. In the field of jazz, according to Tom Lord , he was involved in 171 recording sessions between 1960 and 2019, most recently with pianist Yelena Eckemoff ( Nocturnal Animals ).

Christensen was married to actress and former Norwegian Minister of Culture, Ellen Horn .

Prizes and awards

In 1967 he was honored with the Buddy Prize of the Norwegian Jazz Forum. For his album "Featuring John Scofield and Palle Danielsson ", which he recorded with Knut Riisnas , he received the Norwegian record award in 1992. In 1993 he was named "Jazz Musician of the Year" by the Association of Norwegian Jazz Musicians.
