Enrico Rava (born August 20, 1939 in Trieste ) is an Italian jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player .

Live and act

Rava, who grew up in Turin, got to know hot jazz through his brother's records . After his first appearances as a trombonist in traditional jazz combos, he switched to the trumpet under the influence of Miles Davis and Chet Baker . As early as 1960 he led his own quartet. In 1964 he was part of the quintet of Gato Barbieri , between 1965 and 1968 he played in the group of Steve Lacy , a. a. with Johnny Dyani and Louis Moholo . From 1969 to 1972 he worked in New York City and played with Bill Dixon and in the Jazz Composer's Orchestra as well as in Escalator over the Hill and belonged to the group of Roswell Rudd . His recordings with Dollar Brand , Archie Shepp and Dino Saluzzi also received great attention . Playing in his own bands a. John Abercrombie , Jeanne Lee , Roswell Rudd, Jean-François Jenny-Clark and Aldo Romano , but also Argentine musicians, since he lived temporarily in Buenos Aires , where his wife Graciela worked as a filmmaker. In the 1970s he also composed film scores - for Bernardo Bertolucci , among others .

In the 1980s he also played with Gil Evans and Cecil Taylor , but always had groups of his own, which initially played in the jazz rock idiom. More and more he was interested in composition and Italian tradition. In his record projects Rava , L'Opera Va and Carmen he dealt intensively with the implementation of opera arias in jazz. With the trumpeter Paolo Fresu , Rava has made several records on which he deals with the trumpeters in the history of jazz (e.g. Bix , Shades of Chet , Play Miles Davis ). The pianist Stefano Bollani first became known in his groups. The trombonist Gianluca Petrella has been a member of his quintet since 1997 ; he also played longer with drummer Emanuele Maniscalco . With Gianluca Petrella, Eberhard Weber and Reto Weber he was also in the trio or quartet The Europeans .

In 2011 the Italian publisher Feltrinelli published Enrico Rava's autobiography under the title Incontri con musicisti straordinari. La storia del mio jazz. In it he describes his many encounters with international jazz greats such as Gato Barbieri, Carla Bley , Don Cherry , Steve Lacy , Cecil Taylor and many others.

Awards

In 2002 Rava was awarded the Danish Jazzpar Prize . For his European contribution to contemporary jazz, he was also awarded the French order Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres .
