Chip White
Alan "Chip" White (born December 21, 1946 in New York City ; † August 5, 2020 there ) was an American jazz musician ( drums ).
Live and act
White started learning percussion when he was nine. While studying at Ithaca College , he took classes at the Berklee School of Music ; in later years he studied orchestration and arrangement with Frank Foster . From the 1970s he worked as a professional drummer with musicians such as Enrico Rava , Tom Waits , Etta Jones , Houston Person , Teddy Edwards and Jaki Byard . In 1994 he founded the Chip White Ensemble , produced a jazz musical ( Manhattan Moments , 1990) and toured with the Houston Person-Etta Jones Quintet. In 1994 White recorded his debut album Harlem Sunset for the Postcards label . From the 1990s he also took part in recordings by Jeff Berman , Klaus Ignatzek , Irene Reid and Terri Franklin . In the field of jazz he was involved in 20 recording sessions between 1993 and 2011, according to Tom Lord . He also produced several albums of his own music, including his Dedications series. White was the author of a book of poetry about jazz musicians, I'm Just a Drummer in the Band . He died in August 2020 at the age of 73.
