from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Steve Nelson (born August 11, 1954 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American vibraphonist and was a member of Dave Holland's quintet and big band for more than a decade . There he took on the role that a pianist usually has.

Live and act

Steve Nelson came to the vibraphone through a friend's father, George Monroe, who was a talented amateur vibraphonist. He built a hands-on musician base by playing with the Pittsburgh-based jazz musicians. Nelson studied at Rutgers University , whose jazz branch was just being established, earned both a bachelor's and master's degree in music and taught at Princeton University , among others . He became aware of Bobby Hutcherson through his collaboration with Grant Green and his album Idle Moments , and after a week-long concert he dealt intensively with his playing style for a vibraphonist rather late. He has performed at concerts and festivals around the world and recorded as the leader of his own group. He lives near New York and has performed and recorded with many famous musicians, including Kenny Barron , Bobby Watson , Mulgrew Miller , David "Fathead" Newman , who influenced him greatly, Donald Brown , James Williams , Johnny Griffin and Jackie McLean . He played with George Shearing for three years .

In 2007 his album Sound-Effect was released with pianist Mulgrew Miller, Peter Washington on bass and Lewis Nash on drums. In 2010 he was a member of the Dave Holland Quintet.

Steve Nelson is influenced by Milt Jackson , and his solos are characterized by great thematic ingenuity, although his overall sound is not always catchy or light. He has also mastered all the techniques of modern vibraphone playing since Bobby Hutcherson with virtuosity, including playing with four mallets to accompany other soloists.
