The Spitzmauer is with a height of 2446 m above sea level. A. the second highest mountain in the Dead Mountains in Upper Austria . The approximately 800 meter high east wall made of banked Dachstein limestone gives the mountain from this side a shapely summit structure that dominates the Stodertal .
Tourist development
The first known tourist ascent took place on July 23, 1858 by the Viennese botanist Karl Stoitzner and the school teacher H. Langeder with the guide Matthias Hotz , commonly known as Haarschlager . The first ascent through the east wall was found in 1906 by Robert Damberger and Hans Kirchmaier .
Climbs
The mountain can be reached from Hinterstoder via the Prielschutzhaus . Thereby about 1850 meters of altitude have to be overcome. From the Prielschutzhaus the marked path leads through the Klinserschlucht gorge and from its end through the valley between Weitgrubenkopf ( 2259 m ) and Spitzmauer, moderately steep, into the Meisenbergsattel west of the summit. From there over grassy slopes and rocky steps to the summit.
Some classic tours of the Dead Mountains lead through the east face of the Spitzmauer. The Stodertalersteig, a climbing route of difficulty B, leads through the lowest part of the north face into the saddle between Weitgrubenkopf and Spitzmauer.
