Lafayette Harris (born May 29, 1963 in Philadelphia ) is an American jazz pianist . Influenced by Chick Corea , McCoy Tyner and Kenny Barron , he has developed an independent and eloquent style.

Live and act

Harris grew up in his hometown, where he played in funk and pop music groups as a teenager . He then studied, first at the Peabody Institute and Oberlin College , then with Kenny Barron at Rutgers University . In 1985 he moved to New York City , where he became a member of the Moffett Family . Soon he toured North America and Europe with Max Roach , Dizzy Gillespie , Jon Hendricks , Stanley Turrentine , Lionel Hampton , Al Gray and Donald Byrd . In 1992 he made guest appearances with Barbara Morrison and in 1994/95 with his own bands at European festivals. He also acted as musical director of the show Songs My Mother Taught Me with Melba Moore and the dance show Cab Calloways Legacy of Swing . Since 2003 he has accompanied Ernestine Anderson again and again . He was also involved in recordings by Slide Hampton , John Gordon , Donald Harrison , Chico Freeman , Leon Dorsey and Julian Coryell and performed in a duo with Roswell Rudd .
