Terell Lamark Stafford (born November 25, 1966 in Miami ) is an American jazz trumpeter .

Stafford grew up in Chicago and Silver Spring and played the trumpet from the age of thirteen. He came to jazz relatively late and initially studied classical music at the University of Maryland (Bachelor's degree in 1988), where he already played in the school's jazz band. He continued his studies at Rutgers University (now specially focused on jazz, master's degree in 1993) and also played in the quintet "Horizon" by Bobby Watson and Victor Lewis , with whom he spent a total of seven years, including the Montreux Jazz Festival , North Sea Jazz Festival and Jay Leno's Tonight Show . He then played with McCoy Tyner's Latin All-Star Band (with Steve Turré and Dave Valentin ) and his sextet, the bands of Kenny Barron (who was one of his teachers at Rutgers University), Benny Golson , Frank Wess , the big band by Jimmy Heath , and the Jon Faddis Orchestra. His debut album "Time to let go" was released in 1995 by Candid (with saxophonist friend Tim Warfield ), which was followed by four more by 2007: "Centripetal Force" 1996, " Fields of Gold " 2000, "New Beginnings" 2003 with Mulgrew, among others Miller , “Taking Chances” 2007 at Max Jazz and 2011 This Side of Strayhorn . He can be heard as a sideman on numerous albums, including by Melissa Walker , his wife, and Diana Krall . He played with Cedar Walton , Alvin Queen , Herbie Mann , the Clayton Brothers and Christian McBride . He is currently a member of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (which emerged from the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra ), which regularly plays at the Village Vanguard in New York. He also plays regularly in Matt Wilson's Arts and Crafts and tours with his own band.

Stafford is a music professor and director of the jazz program at Temple University in Philadelphia . In Stafford's own words, he received the impetus for teaching from Bill Cosby , in one of whose TV shows he appeared regularly as an accompanist and who had studied at Temple University. Stafford also teaches at various jazz clinics in the summer and taught in the Juilliard School Jazz Program.
