Melissa Walker

Melissa Walker (born July 3, 1964 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is an American jazz singer .

Walker sang in soul groups with her sisters and then went on to study law, management and African studies at Brown University . In the late 1980s she took lessons from Ronnie Wells, Ron Ellison, Norman Simmons and the voice trainer Yvonne Hachet. She performed occasionally in jazz clubs but remained an amateur singer until the mid-1990s. In 1993 her debut album "Little Wishes" was released. She performed at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis and his orchestra and then sang at international festivals such as the JazzFest Berlin and the North Sea Jazz Festival . In 1997 she recorded the album “May I Feel” for Enja with Gary Bartz and her husband, trumpeter Terell Stafford . In 2001 she toured Europe with Ray Brown and in Japan with Sadao Watanabe . Kenny Barron and Makoto Ozone were guests on their most successful album "I Saw the Sky" (2001) . In 2009 her last CD "In the Middle of It All" was released on a new label (as of 2/2015). According to the CD text, the singer suffered from a long-lasting voice disorder from 2003. The singer also writes lyrics for titles such as John Coltrane's "Equinox".
