Makoto Ozone ( Japanese 小 曽 根 真 , Ozone Makoto ; born March 25, 1961 in Kobe ) is a Japanese jazz pianist .

According to Ozone, he began studying music very early on; He played the Hammond organ when he was two and improvised when he was seven. Between the ages of 7 and 9, he appeared on television with his father Minoru (also a pianist). After listening to Oscar Peterson's albums , he switched to piano at the age of 12. While still in high school, he performed with a professional big band. From 1980 he studied jazz composition and arrangement at Berklee College of Music in Boston . He also played with Gary Burton in performances in the Boston area and recorded in 1982 as a duo with Phil Wilson . In 1983 his first album "Makoto Ozone" was released on CBS (with Burton and Eddie Gomez ), on which he played his own compositions. In 1983 he toured the world with the quartet of Gary Burton, on whose albums "Real Life Hits" and "Whiz Kids" he played. He also recorded with Chuck Loeb , Marc Johnson and Paquito D'Rivera and in 1986 released his second album "After". In 1989 he returned to Japan and recorded for JVC.
In 1994 Verve released his first solo album "Breakout". In 1996 his trio album "The Trio" (with John Scofield ) won the prize for best Japanese jazz album from the Japanese " Swing Journal ". Partners were Kiyoshi Kitagawa (bass) and Clarence Penn (drums), whom he met at the "Floating Jazz Festival" on the " SS Norway ". The follow-up album "Dear Oscar" (for Oscar Peterson ) also won the prize for the best Japanese jazz album in 1998. In Japan he also had his own radio show. In 1999 he moved back to New York City ; In 1997 he performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival with vocalist Kimiko Itoh , whom he also accompanied on her album "Kimiko", which won the 2000 "Swing Journal" award for Japanese jazz singers.
April 2002 the Verve album "Treasure" was created with Gary Burton, Michael Brecker , Chick Corea , James Genus and singer Jon Hendricks . In addition to jazz, he also worked intensively on classical music, for example in a duo with Gary Burton on the album "Virtuosi" (2002) and in a duo with the Polish singer Anna Maria Jopek (2009/2011). In 2003 he played again with Burton on his album "Generations".
