Phillips Elder Wilson Jr. (born January 19, 1937 in Belmont / Massachusetts ) is an American jazz trombonist.

Wilson began playing professionally in jazz bands from his hometown area at the age of fifteen. He attended the New England Conservatory of Music and the Navy School of Music and played in Herb Pomeroy's Big Band from 1955 to 1957 . He left the New England Conservatory to perform with the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra and was a member of Woody Herman's band from 1962 to 1965 after military service . Since 1966 he has taught at the Berklee School of Music .

In the 1960s Wilson wrote numerous arrangements for Buddy Rich , led several big bands and worked as a sideman a. a. with Louis Armstrong , Frank Sinatra , Sarah Vaughan and Clark Terry . He was also a guest soloist with the Boston Pops and in European big bands such as the hr big band and the NDR big band .

Wilson has taught jazz at the New England Conservatory and has given jazz courses at Harvard University , Yale University , Kansas State University , the University of California , the Sidney Conservatory, and the Frankfurt Conservatory . Wilson has directed the Thursday Night Dues Band in Berklee since 1966 (since 1985 under the name Rainbow Band ), in which musicians such as Terri Lyne Carrington , Cyrus Chestnut , John Scofield , Ernie Watts and Roy Hargrove played.
