The underground station Taborstraße on the U2 underground line has been in Vienna's 2nd district , Leopoldstadt , since 2008 .

location

The station is named after the oldest street in Leopoldstadt, Taborstraße (formerly Kremser Straße, documented since 1406), which (as part of a long-distance road towards Bohemia and Moravia at the time ) runs from the Danube Canal to the Nordbahnviertel and is an important traffic and business axis in the district. Among other things, it forms the eastern edge of the Carmelite district at the station .

The U2 station Taborstraße is roughly in the middle of this axis. It extends below the Taborstrasse / Obere Augartenstrasse intersection to Novaragasse 8. It has two side platforms in two separate tunnels and was built between 2003 and 2008. The station tubes were built in a closed construction, the station in an open construction (cover construction). A geothermal system was installed in the station structure.

The station was opened on May 10, 2008 with the opening of the second section of the U2 between Schottenring and the stadium . The stairs lead to Taborstrasse / Obere Augartenstrasse and Novaragasse. The Novaragasse 8 property is owned by Wiener Linien and was built by them as a residential building with an integrated underground entrance.

Surroundings

The Augarten and cultural institutions such as the main building of the Vienna Boys' Choir , the MuTh , the Filmarchiv Austria , the Augarten Porcelain Manufactory , the Ambrosimuseum and Augarten Contemporary and the Vienna Crime Museum are located near the station .

Further public transport

The tram line 21, which used to traveling on the line Tabor Road, was closed as part of the extension of the U2 to the stadium. Today line 2, which connects the city center, and bus line 5B operate here .

Design

The fire smoke ventilation system on the eastern edge of the house at Novaragasse 8 was decorated with plant motifs by the artist Ingeborg Strobl in 2008 . The picture consists of 56 enamel plates with a total height of 26 meters and a total width of 4.5 meters. The floral motifs are reminiscent of wood engravings from the 19th century. They are reminiscent of the earlier names of Novaragasse (which was called Gartengasse from 1797–1812 and Gärtnergasse from 1812–1862 ) and of the scientific Austrian Novara expedition (1857–1859).
