The Nordbahnviertel (also Nordbahnhofviertel ) is a nascent district in Vienna's 2nd district, Leopoldstadt . This is an approximately 75 hectare freight yard area of ​​the former Nordbahnhof ( urban development area Nordbahnhof or Nordbahnhofgelände ) that is no longer required by the Austrian Federal Railways for rail operations and on which a new district has been gradually being built since the 1990s. The completion of the development is expected for 2025.

The name is older than the quarter and for decades was the name for the city ​​quarter immediately west of Nordbahnstrasse up to Heinestrasse near Praterstern . In today's understanding, this area north of the street Am Tabor is called the Allied quarter (after the Allied street ) and south of it as the Volkertviertel (after the Volkertmarkt). The name Nordbahnviertel for the site of the former freight station has been in use since around 2010.

The north station area around 1925

In 1856, according to the city map, this area was still part of the Danube floodplains with the flagpole water and the Kaiser water and other arms of the unregulated river and islands with meadows and alluvial forests ( fishermen's heaps ) that were regularly flooded by floods . Today's Lassallestraße was called Schwimmschulallee until 1875 because a military swimming school was located here, and was then renamed Kronprinz-Rudolf-Straße to match the new Danube bridge .

After the Danube regulation , completed in 1875 , which eliminated the risk of flooding, the backwaters were filled in here. The extensive freight station of the north station was laid out on the site ; the station was the most important in Vienna for passenger and freight traffic until 1918. The former Kaiser-Ferdinands-Nordbahn (KFNB), the first steam railway in Old Austria , lost a lot of traffic on its connections to Moravia , Silesia and Galicia, especially after 1945, during the Iron Curtain era ; the use of the site, which was in the Soviet sector of Vienna from 1945 to 1955, left a lot to be desired. In the last decades of the 20th century, the ÖBB relocated goods handling to the terminals in Vienna Inzersdorf on the Donauländebahn and Vienna Freudenau on the Donauuferbahn so that the north station area could be sold for other uses agreed with the Vienna city administration.

New use

The City of Vienna has bought large areas of land here from the ÖBB and commissioned the planning departments of the municipal authorities to develop the area. 1994 has council the Guidelines North Station decided.

The part of the area on Lassallestrasse has been built since the 1990s; almost exclusively office buildings were built here. Another area strip is to be built parallel to these blocks, and this built-up zone is then to be gradually expanded to the north.

The 31,000 square meter Rudolf Bednar Park , located on the eastern part of the site near Vorgartenstrasse and Haussteinstrasse , named after the district chairman 1977–1984, was opened in 2008. In 2010, the Gertrude Fröhlich-Sandner campus (kindergarten and elementary school for up to 670 children) was completed on Ernst-Melchior-Gasse not far from the park .

On Bruno-Marek-Allee , Signa Holding built the Austria Campus until 2018 between Jakov-Lind-Gasse / Rothschildplatz and Walcherstraße according to plans by Boris Podrecca (he emerged as the winner in a two-stage competition) , of which half of the Unicredit Bank Austria was hired for its new headquarters. The gross floor area of ​​the buildings (five to six storeys high office buildings for 9,000 workplaces, hotel with around 200 rooms, company restaurants and kindergarten, business premises and art collection) was given as 200,000 square meters, the investment at 490 million euros.

In 2011 it was announced that the following assumptions of the urban planning competition in 1994 have changed:

  • The track route of the northern railway was narrowed, three underpasses were planned in order to be able to extend Taborstrasse , Schweidlgasse and the street Am Tabor onto the site.
  • The connecting track from the Northern Railway to the Danube Bank Railway , which ran through the site in the north, was omitted.
  • In the meantime , an urban planning model has also been created for the former north-west station , which is adjacent to the northwest and which also had a large freight station. Furthermore, new demands are placed on the social infrastructure.

Viennese urban planning and ÖBB therefore planned an urban planning ideas competition to optimize the previous planning.

In 2014 a new urban planning concept was developed for the central area near the old water tower, where a larger open space is now planned. This free center is to be a green space in the northwestern part of the area, which is, however, designed as a "city wilderness": the biotope that has arisen since the abandonment of the freight station is to be preserved unchanged and only limited by new buildings - in contrast to the horticultural designed Rudolf-Bednar- Park, the other large green space in the neighborhood. A railway bridge is also to be retained as a pedestrian bridge. It is hiebei one of the oldest railway bridges in Austria - today green-painted steel frame was built in 1876 as part of the connecting track to Donauuferbahn, the bridge piers were built in 1838. located in this urban wilderness, two ponds as habitats for toads created The discovery of their occurrence on the site delayed construction projects in 2016.

In the Bruno-Marek-Allee / Taborstraße / Leystraße area, the Christine-Nöstlinger education campus is also to be built, which is known as a “flower” because of its floor plan.

In October 2015, ÖBB sold the part of the area that it still owned to a real estate consortium consisting of Wiener Städtische Versicherung, which is closely related to the city administration, Raiffeisen Evolution Project Development GmbH, which is domiciled in the Nordbahnhof area and is majority owned by companies of the Austrian Raiffeisen Group , and the ÖVW, subsidiary of the Erste Bank of the oesterreichischen Sparkassen AG . The ORF reported on the criticism that the area was being developed without an environmental impact assessment . The city administration was of the opinion that there is no overall project, but that individual building plots are being sold and that an EIA is therefore not necessary.

Six high-rise buildings with heights between 60 and 95 meters are planned, and the winning projects were announced in April 2019.

Water tower

The last structural remainder of the old north station, the water tower, is a listed building. A subsequent use is in the room, but the tower would have to be structurally adapted, which is made more difficult by the thick walls and the missing mezzanine floors. The roof structure was renewed in 2012.

North Railway Hall

From 2017 to 2019 the former warehouse of the company IMGRO as part of the research and development project was "mix: North Station" under the guidance of the Technical University of Vienna as a pulse laboratory Northern Railway Hall between utilized. Among other things, co-working spaces, workshops, training rooms, event rooms and a canteen were built. The impulse laboratory was used for the various activities of the project and cooperation partners and also for numerous cultural events. The Viennese city planning established the so-called urban space in the hall as an information center about the current district development in the north and north-west train stations. The end of the temporary use was controversially discussed, and initiatives were formed against the demolition of the hall. After the partial demolition in September 2019, a major fire broke out in November 2019 in the remaining part of the north runway hall. The spread to the listed water tower could be prevented. In December 2019, the complete demolition of the north railway hall, which was badly damaged by the fire, began. The area will subsequently become part of the “Free Center”.

Romanian Orthodox Church

In September 2017, the foundation stone for the Romanian Orthodox Church "On the Holy Resurrection" was laid on Bruno-Marek-Allee. The external appearance and design are based on the Bukowina monasteries , especially (as far as the fresco program is concerned) on the Voroneț monastery church , but the basic form is more reduced to the essentials. The projecting roof required to protect the frescoes is made transparent.

New road network

In 2016 the intersection Bruno-Marek-Allee / Jakov-Lind-Straße was named Rothschildplatz .

2018 followed directly to the Praterstern part of Walcherstraße after 2019 finished building there was Vienna Economic street of Vienna Business named. The junction from the Praterstern itself was named Anitta-Müller-Cohen-Platz in 2019 .

Public transport

Apart from the two underground stations Praterstern and Vorgartenstraße, which are on the edge or near the district, only the 82A bus runs in the area, which has a station at the Gertrude Fröhlich-Sandner education campus.

However, the tram line O, which currently has its northern terminus on the Praterstern, is to be extended into the new building area in 2020. To do this, it will drive like line 5 in Nordbahnstraße to the Am Tabor intersection (this road will be extended into the new site), turn right there and cross the Nordbahn on a grass track to Bruno-Marek-Allee and then continue northwards to this go to Leystraße. The end station is then at the water tower. In addition, a tangential line 12 is planned, which will connect the district via the Nordwestbahnviertel with the Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof.
