Rudolf Bednar Park, opened in 2008 in the 2nd district of Vienna , Leopoldstadt , is the largest park in Vienna built since 1974. The park on part of the former Nordbahnhof area is surrounded in the northeast by new blocks of houses on Vorgartenstrasse, in the southeast by the newly laid out Jakov-Lind-Strasse, in the southwest by the Gertrude Fröhlich-Sandner campus and in the northwest by the newly laid out Krakauer Strasse.

history

The area of the Nordbahnhof , which was formerly used as a freight station (with a focus on coal supply) , was the most important train station in Vienna until 1918, and has been one of the city's promising urban areas close to the center for decades. For a long time, the area was owned by ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG , which, in cooperation with the City of Vienna and the Vienna Housing Fund, wanted to develop a district with apartments for a total of 22,000 residents and with 22,000 jobs by around 2025. Among other things, the 3.1 hectare Rudolf Bednar Park was planned as the “green lung”. The size of the facility corresponds to about five soccer fields. The park is named after the social democratic district head of Leopoldstadt from 1977 to 1984.

In 2005, the Vienna City Gardens (MA 42) launched an international planning competition for the green space with funding from the EU . The winning project comes from Hager Landschaftsarchitektur , Zurich . The jury's decision was unanimous. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in July 2007, the park was opened in September 2008. The park was named after the Leopoldstadt SPÖ politician Rudolf Bednar , who was district chairman of the 2nd district from 1977 to 1984.

layout

Characteristic of the park are the tall, orange-colored metal steles and the connected "tree veil" made of 280 mostly newly planted trees. The orientation of the tree veil is based on the tracks of the former freight station, which ran parallel to the nearby Danube . The southern part of the park offers sports facilities for young people (skating and streetball). Reed gardens run in extension of the newly named Leopoldine-Schlinger-Gasse (called “Axis Radingerstraße” in the planning). The area in front of the residential complex "Wohnen am Park" and the so-called district gardens in the eastern part of the park are intended for quieter uses.

The planning and construction of the park were funded by the European Regional Development Fund as part of the EU program “Goal 2 Vienna”.
