Raiffeisen is the brand or name part of more than 330,000 companies that deal with upstream and downstream agricultural products as well as general financial services around the world. The so-called gable cross (2 crossed horse heads) is very well known as a trademark.

history

With the establishment of Flammer fields Hilfsverein to help impecunious farmers (1848), the Heddesdorfer Darlehnskassen Association (1864) and the Rhenish Agricultural Cooperative Bank (1872) of the social reformers created Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen (1818-1888) models to support impecunious farmers and agricultural cooperative purchasing an affordable Purchase of production goods such as seeds and fertilizers. Both the “Green Loan”, which provided for seeds and fertilizer to be paid for with the later harvest, as well as joint harvest marketing and the locally administered savings and loan funds were introduced in many villages in Germany according to his proposals. At least seven farmers were required to set up village cooperatives for purchasing or sales. In order to be able to negotiate effectively and thus buy seeds and fertilizer cheaply, the cooperative statutes initially provided for unlimited liability with the entire assets of the members. After the first successful phase, the guarantees were limited to the assets of the members of the Board of Management and, after saving up the cooperative assets, to these joint assets. The motto: “One for all, all for one” became the basis of trade for the agricultural cooperatives, just as the name of the inventor “Raiffeisen” became part of the name and brand.

From the savings and consumer associations founded by Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch (1808–1883) in the same period on the basis of cooperatives, the Volksbanken developed, which merged with the Raiffeisenbanken in Germany from the middle of the 20th century.
