The Stadion station on the U2 subway line in the 2nd district of Vienna , Leopoldstadt , was built on an elevated position. It is located at the intersection of Vorgartenstraße / Meiereistraße. It is named after the Ernst-Happel-Stadion and the Ferry-Dusika-Hallenstadion , both near the station.

The station was put into operation on May 10, 2008 with the opening of the second section of the U2 between Schottenring and the stadium. It is designed as a three-track high station with two symmetrical central platforms and exits at both ends. In order to be able to better channel the flow of passengers, four additional exits are available per platform for major events.

The additional track makes it possible to use amplifier trains without any problems and to make getting on and off the thousands of stadium visitors as easy as possible. The concept for the station was developed by Wiener Linien together with the Austrian Institute for School and Sports Facility Construction (ÖISS). A reception building is to the side of Vorgartenstraße at the level of Dr.-Natterer-Gasse, the main reception building leads to Meiereistraße and serves as access to the nearby sports facilities. The Ernst-Happel-Stadion, the Ferry-Dusika-Hallenstadion and the Stadion Center shopping center are in the immediate vicinity . During the European Football Championship in 2008 , a control system - also provided for other major events - ensured for the first time in Vienna that only as many passengers got onto the platforms as could fit into the next underground train.

The tram line 21, the inverted earlier parallel to the current route of the U2 on a separate track body in the Engerthstraße to the stadium, was abandoned in the course of extension of the U2. During events in the nearby stadiums, other tram lines were run on this track as part of the so-called “stadium traffic”.
