Terri Lyne Carrington (* 4. August 1965 in Medford , Massachusetts ) is an American jazz - drummer , composer and producer , in addition to teaching at Berklee College of Music and operates its own music label .

As a child, Carrington, often referred to as a child prodigy , played with jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie , Rahsaan Roland Kirk , Oscar Peterson and Joe Williams . Later, Carrington worked alongside her solo projects as a drummer and sometimes also as a producer for artists such as Diana Krall , Cassandra Wilson , Dianne Reeves , Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter . The jazz author and journalist Scott Yanow described her as “ one of the first important female drummers in jazz. "

Live and act

Terri Lyne Carrington was born into a family of musicians. Her grandfather, Matt Carrington, was the drummer for Fats Waller and Chu Berry , her father, Sonny Carrington, saxophonist for James Brown . Carrington was able to play the saxophone at the age of five, and at the age of seven - the age-related loss of her incisors made it impossible for her to play the saxophone - she took over the drums from her grandfather, who died six months before she was born. Her first teacher was drummer Alan Dawson , who taught drummers such as Tony Williams , Steve Smith and Jeff Tain Watts .

In 1975 - at the age of ten - she made her first big appearance at the Wichita Jazz Festival with Clark Terry . The following year, Alma and Lawrence Berk , co-founders of Berklee College of Music in Boston, overheard Carrington at a jam session with Oscar Peterson's backing band, they were so excited they gave Carrington a full scholarship. Through the drummer Buddy Rich , Carrington got an endorsement contract with Zildjian at the age of twelve , making her the youngest artist to have been supported by Zildjian to date. On a television show, Rich judged the then eleven-year-old:

She sounds like she knows what she's doing. "

Initially, Carrington attended Berklee College once a week after school. At the age of 16, she recorded a private album called TLC and Friends with Kenny Barron , Buster Williams , George Coleman and their father . After graduating from high school, she studied full-time for three semesters at Berklee College. During this time she met and worked with musicians like Kevin Eubanks , Mike Stern , Branford Marsalis , Pat Metheny , Greg Osby and others.

At this time, she also met the drummer Jack DeJohnette and befriended him and his wife Lydia. DeJohnette on Carrington:

Terri Lyne Carrington wasn't a student - she showed up and hung out with us. She was already a professional. I love her. She composes, sings and plays great. "

Encouraged by DeJohnette, Carrington went to New York City in 1983 , where she a. a. worked with Stan Getz , James Moody , Lester Bowie , Pharoah Sanders , Cassandra Wilson and David Sanborn . Saxophonist Wayne Shorter described his first encounter with Carrington in an interview in 1987 as follows:

She came in, sat down, hit the snare just once (he mimics the sound with his eyes wide open) and then I already knew: Hey, this is exactly what I was looking for. "

Terri Lyne Carrington and Herbie Hancock

In 1989 she moved to Los Angeles and became the drummer for the band at the Arsenio Hall Show . She also toured with Mike Stern, Joe Sample , Al Jarreau , Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.

Also in 1989, Carrington released her first album, Real Life Story , produced by her and Robert Irving III and released on PolyGram . Carrington also featured Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Hiram Bullock , Carlos Santana , Patrice Rushen , John Scofield , Grover Washington, Jr. and Gerald Albright on the album . Most of the tracks on the album were also composed by Carrington. It was for a Grammy Award nominated and reached number three on the Top Contemporary Jazz Albums of Billboard magazine,.

In the following years Carrington worked not only as a drummer, but also as a composer and producer a. a. with Gino Vannelli , Dianne Reeves, Siedah Garrett , Marilyn Scott , the Danish pop singers Stig Rossen and Monique and the jazz musicians Chris Minh Doky and Niels Lan Doky (Doky Brothers). The Carrington produced Dianne Reeves album That Day (1997) was nominated for a Grammy. Carrington 2001 on her work as a producer:

Drummers bring something special to the world of production, which is dominated by keyboardists. They have a great sense of structure for how a song should flow. "

In 1998 she worked on Herbie Hancock's album Gershwin's World - together with Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder - international success . The album received the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance, Individual or Group . As a result, she also took part in the European tour of Hancock's project Future 2 Future .

In 2002 the album Jazz Is a Spirit was released , on which Herbie Hancock, Gary Thomas , Wallace Roney , Terence Blanchard and Kevin Eubanks also played alongside their band - Adam Rogers (guitar), Jimmy Haslip (bass) and Greg Osby (saxophone) . Most of the titles were written by Carrington. The title Jazz Is a Spirit is a quote from jazz singer Abbey Lincoln from a panel discussion on jazz. The album was released on the German label ACT by Siegfried Loch in February 2002, while it was only available in the USA in September. Carrington had established contact with Loch through the French guitarist Nguyên Lê , on whose 2003 album Purple: Celebrating Jimi Hendrix she was involved.

The Terri Lyne Carrington Endowed Scholarship , founded by Zildjian, was awarded for the first time at Berklee College in October 2002 . The scholarship is awarded exclusively to female instrumentalists.

In September 2003 Carrington, who also teaches drums at the University of Southern California , received an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music.

In 2004 they released their third album, Structure . It was recorded with the same regular line-up as Jazz Is a Spirit and also released on ACT. While Jazz Is a Spirit - apart from the part of the title track spoken by actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner ( The Cosby Show ) - is a purely instrumental album, Carrington also appears as a singer on Structure with Joni Mitchell's Ethiopia herself.

Since 2005 she has been a lecturer in the Percussion Faculty at Berklee College.

Together with the pianist and keyboardist Robert Irving III, with whom she already produced her first album Real Life Story , Carrington founded the label Sonic Portraits in 2007. The first release of Sonic Portraits was Irving's album New Momentum , which was co-produced by Carrington. Back in 1991, Carrington had stated in an interview with Berklee Today:

My ultimate goal is to have my own label, to be an important record boss. So far there haven't been any women and there haven't been very many blacks either. My goal for a long, long, long time is to be like David Geffen or Herb Alpert . "

In 2011 Carrington released the album The Mosaic Project , which featured numerous well-known singers. For this she got her first own Grammy Award for the best jazz singing album of the year.

Two years later, Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue was released, another primarily instrumental album, for which she received another Grammy in 2014 . The album was conceived as a homage to the piano trio album Money Jungle , which was made exactly 50 years earlier , in which Duke Ellington, now over sixty years old, met two protagonists of the bebop generation, bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach . Carrington took over the trio format with the young Gerald Clayton on the piano and the bassist Christian McBride , but expanded it on individual pieces with brass arrangements, a percussionist, vocalises from Lizz Wright , a humorous scat from Clark Terrys and Herbie Hancock, who quotes Ellington on music and money , as well as samples from Martin Luther King to US President Obama . Only the compositions by Ellington that he had written specifically for the session were played, supplemented by his own compositions by Carrington and Clayton.

She works as a drummer and artistic director in the joint women's project Sing The Truth by Angélique Kidjo , Cécile McLorin Salvant and Lizz Wright . The project is dedicated to the work of committed women such as Odetta , Billie Holiday , Miriam Makeba and others.

Equipment

Carrington has endorsement agreements with Zildjian ( drumsticks and cymbals ), Yamaha ( kettles ) and Remo ( heads ). The setup of Carrington's drums varies depending on the performance. In general, they used a 22 "or 20" bass drum , three to five toms (normally 10 ", 12", 14 "and 16", occasionally 8 ") and a wooden snare . Your preferred material is maple . Decisive factor in the selection of The materials used for kettles and skins have a “warm sound” for Carrington. Furthermore, she uses a 15 " hi-hat , as well as several crash, splash and ride cymbals, some of which were made according to her wishes. Carrington uses the Terri-Lyne-Carrington-Signature -Sticks made of hickory as sticks .
